“The other dioceses in the state of New Mexico, Gallup or Las Cruces, have not issued limits on the length of homilies since resuming the public celebration of Mass.”

It’s possible that Santa Fe’s covid cases are higher than other regions making stricter conditions necessary.

It would be nice to have some uniform guideline on this here. I’m not saying they all have to be 5 minutes, but there was like a 20+ minute homily at one church the other week and it seemed to be contrary to all the other precautions they have been taking against COVID. All the other churches are getting the Sunday Mass done in about 35 to 40 minutes, there was no reason for this particular Mass to go over an hour.

I’ll be honest, this headline makes me laugh.

Probably because I’m imagining my local community’s affectionate jokes about one of our local (beloved) priests if this were instituted locally.

I don’t know if he could do this.

It’d be really fun to watch him try.

(One of those situations where he finds a new story in the middle of every story, like a never ending matryoshka doll of stacked stories. You never know when you’ve found the last doll, but you know they eventually all have to snap back together again and that will take awhile.)

Even pre-Covid there were giggles in the pews during moments in homilies where we could suddenly hear several extra minutes added. I’m imagining broad grins and rapt attention if people knew he was under pressure to keep his words time-constrained.
