Is it o.k. to get married by a Justice of the Peace first and then take the marriage classes and get married by the catholic church?

No!

Br. Rich SFO:
boy, phew,… you got to quit mincing your words… 😃

don’t be so vague… 😃 that’s whats wrong with the clergy today, they just never say what they mean… 😃
Give’em heck Br Rich

The reason for the civil marriage first is because my fiance is in the military and he will be moving across the country with possible deployment and wants to ensure I have health benefits, life insurance, and it enables me to gain employment.

I understand your reasons. However I still cannot advise you to intentionally go against the Canon Law of the Church and the Local Bishop. Who as far as I know all have pre-marriage requirements. Simply because it would be an offense against a Sacrament.

That is actually what I thought it might be… I agree with Br. Rich. Sometimes it isn’t easy to do what is right. Those reason really delute what the Sacrament is about.

I understand you can not adivise us to get civilally married first, but can we be denied a Catholic wedding six months after. We are already signed up for the premarriage classes and spoke with the priest and the date is set. We are not civilally married yet, but feel that since the church doesn’t recognize a marriage outside of the church then it would be getting married for the first time. We can not push up the wedding date because both of our families live far distances away and need time for travel and monetary reasons.

I see your point… You wouldn’t be living as a married couple… Have you talked to your priest about what you are thinking about doing?

Just get married in the Church, but don’t have all the hoopla…that’ s not what a wedding is truly about. A Catholic wedding can be just like a JP wedding…the 2 of you, the priest, 2 witnesses, and God. That’s all you need. No choir, no mass…just an exchange of vows and the sacrament.

Just have a party after!

yes, but our families want us to have a big wedding. We both come from big families. We would have no problem having a small ceremony now and then having the big ceremony in six months that is already planned.

Do that… Your families shouldn’t be upset, they should be proud. Although I have heard how some families can be… :o
