CLAIM: "Islam is NOT a religion of peace"

This is a blog post I ran across, where the guy discusses the never-ending controversy on whether or not the word “Islam” means “peace”. Aside from the typical air of false grievance and projection of motives apparent in his writing, I wanted to see what you guys thought about the article… especially if you are familiar with Arabic.

mereislam.info/2005/03/claim-islam-is-not-religion-of-peace.html

PS. I wonder how long it will take for our anonymous one-star rating troll to show up and leave his mark here?

Islam (Arabic: الإسلام; al-'islām), comes from the word aslama - meaning ‘to submit’ (from taslim - submission). A muslim is ‘one who submits’ i.e. the will of Allah. Aslama or slm (to omit the vowels as is common when semitic language are written down)also has the meaning peace ‘salaam’. The relationship of both words ‘peace’ and ‘submission’ can be seen in the syriac (syriac is a language related to arabic) - the syriac word 'aslem - to make peace, to surrender.

To answer ur q - Islam means submission or surrender, but it also has the meaning of peace.

Some folks would deny that the word Islam means peace, that’s because they want to make Islam seem more violent. But u won’t find any linguists agreeing with them.

So I guess the meaning of the word “Islam” depends completely upon the context it’s used in?

I had thought that “salaam” was always used to mean peace. (of course it still has the same root)

Catholic answers main web site has an article (paper) titled

“Endless Jihad”

It says islam means submission

It also talks about the violent teachings of the koran.

Islam does mean “submission”… this is correct, and even Muslims won’t deny it. However, a lot of Muslims claim that it also means “peace”. This is the point of contention.

In my opinion, for Islam to mean ‘peace’, every verse advocating violence would have to be expunged from the Koran. It would make it a REALLY short book…

When muslims greet each other with ‘peace be with you’, they say

Salaam Alaikum”.

NOT

Islaam Alaikum

so why is it that some muslims claim that islam means peace? damage control.

When everyone in the world submits to Allah as proclaimed by Muhammad, or more particularly by modern interpreters from Saudi Arabia, everyone will be at peace. Until the kingdom of God is complete we must assume that the world is divided by two concepts: dar al Islam and dar al Harb.

That’s the way it is.

Yup,

Look at Turkey and Kurdistan. The religion of oneness is at war.

If some people say that islam means peace then why so much hate filled talk in the Quran? Here is one quote, “You who believe, do not take the Jews and Christians as allies: they are allies only to each other. Anyone who takes them as an ally becomes one of them-God(allah) does not guide such wrongdoers.” That is a passege from the Quran. From my understanding of Islam. If you do not follow it the way the prophet Muhammed said to follow it then you are one of them(infidels.) Islam is not a peacefull religion. Those Muslims who say it is are not following the Quran/Koran to the fullist.

The root of the word means to submit, to surrender, to have peace, to have pure intentions. Depending on how the word is used the meaning is shifted slightly, in terms of the practical aspects of the faith itself ‘to submit’ is probably the most *direct * translation of Islam.

But the true meaning of the word is a combination of the meanings given above, not one individually.

It is to turn one’s mind off and just accept.

They aren’t very consistent but then look at what happened in Rwanda in the 1990’s. Many of the butchered were Christians butchered by Christians. I wish this life were simpler.

Well, do we reason with God…? No, do you?
Yes, god encourage to reason about lots of things so we know what is right from wrong or we find our way to him.
Do we accept his laws and in good faith or we pick and choose?
Yes, we can study his creation, as leading muslim and none Muslim scholars did before us and are doing today.
Yes, we can improve on whatever is beneficial to all of us human and that within his divine laws.
Yes, we can discus, reason and use our common sense to find out why God told us do one thing and not the other.
but we are not to question his rules even if we don’t like them. Period
If you disagree with me, please tell me why perhaps there is something I don’t know.

Thanks.

I have reasons for having faith.

The difference is that in Islam you believe in absurdities and contradictions.

I see this from arguments put forward by Moslems too - how it has affected their way of thinking.

Let’s just call one “Ham2” for the moment. He argues about the corruption in the Bible message then uses the Bible to show how it predicted Muhammed’s ‘prophethood’.

He argues for the Gospel of Barnabas - as being genuine, but against the idea that Jesus was ‘substituted’ on the cross, even though the Gospel of Barnabas evidences this.

We see Moslems argue Muhammed is the example for all time, but when I raise the issue of Muhammed’s marriage to the child Aisha* I am encountered with arguments that say “Oh, that was then!” (in other words it’s an example relative to only that time).

Another is the argument that there’s no compulsion in religion, yet you impose a tax and special conditions on people (non-Moslems) just because of their religion.

This isn’t even touching upon the absurdities in the Koran and Hadith (such as talking ants, etc.). It’s the same mentality that says “Islam is a religion of peace” when you mean “Islam wants everyone to peacefully submit to Islam”. *Peace *and submission aren’t the same thing.

The amount of times Moslems refute themselves!

You’re quite welcome to discuss any or all of these issues separately, or altogether (may we adjourn to a new thread of your creation?)

*-where you can claim a girl is actually a woman, but no Moslem nation seems to want to give such ‘women’ adult rights such as that to drive or to vote AT THE SAME TIME they conclude she’s a woman (under Islamic law) - in other words, she’s only a woman when it serves for a man to marry her.

**Please let’s not engage in accusations and misrepresentations of each others faiths that are not true, what hard fact evidences do you offer to back up your views?, Just name one…

Remember what Jesus [Peace and blessings of god almighty has taught us in the bible, [Matthew 5:20 “For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven”/COLOR]**

Does not he know that not all of the bible and whatever is in it is not corrupted and there are variances and differences in the bible same as in the hadith. I guess he does not know. it’s know It’s extremely impolite and very well unnecessary that a muslim comes on this forum and disrespectfully talk about the bible or the catholicism. he has no right to…! and yes tell him from another Muslim that is know how you debate with other people.

He argues for the Gospel of Barnabas - as being genuine, but against the idea that Jesus was ‘substituted’ on the cross, even though the Gospel of Barnabas evidences this.

**Look here, though I have no idea what the gentleman was referring to however the matter of crucifixion is evidently address by the Quran in lots of ways, it’s permissible for me as a muslim to engage attacks and counter attacks on faith and particularly on a Catholic forum, perhaps some misguided Muslim do that and as you and I know for a fact some extremist muslims do lot more than attacking any ones faith.

So my friendly advice to you is that learn the subject enough so you can easily judge for yourself fact from lies.**

We see Moslems argue Muhammed is the example for all time, but when I raise the issue of Muhammed’s marriage to the child Aisha* I am encountered with arguments that say “Oh, that was then!” (in other words it’s an example relative to only that time).

My friend, I have no idea where this silly idea “really a laughable yet sick joke” of the prophet of God marrying a baby comes from but it’s a nasty blasphemy and those who don’t know much about Islam always sort of use it, I suggest that you visit one of the sites below and see for your self, this is not more than a sick lie.

I** agree with you and you are right, the word peace “Salaam in Arabic” the word Islam “submission in english to the will of God” are not the same thing and do not mean the same and Salaam “peace” is not used to mean Islam is a peacuful religion, however, why could tell you what makes Islam peaceful and why Islam is peaceful. in some other time perhaps.

What is with the Ants…? can you please elaborate. thanks.**

I think you are somewhat exaggerating, I will dismiss your views out rightly, but one of the reason women don’t drive in the case of Saudi Arabia has lot ore to with cultural then Islam, moreover, Muslim do vote, become prime minister of her country, head of state. I suggest you research more, it will strengthen your knowledge about Islam lot better.

My dear friend, instead of get into a counter argument and trying to disproof your points, I suggest you go on to selected authentic religious sites (www.islamonline.net
, www.harunyahya.com/index.php,islam-usa.com,www.islam101.com/dawah/course101.html) as these sites are good enough to give you a clear and better picture of what Islam is and not.

Thanks so much for your valuable time,

Peace and god bless,

This was my impression, as well. Glad to see how many replies this thread received since I haven’t checked these forums in a while.

By the way, I see the anonymous one-star troll did indeed strike just as I had predicted in the OP… 😉

I still can’t see why anyone converts.

I see very good arguments by Catholics *for *Catholicism. And I’ve seen them for Protestantism. I’ve never seen a convincing argument *for *Islam.
