What do you do when someone claims the Church is homophobic for telling voters that they cannot vote for a candidate that’s for gay civil unions?

Tell them that you were born a homophobe and that you have no choice in the matter, and furthermore that being called a homophobe is offensive to you, and that you feel your rights are being violated by being called one…

all with a serious face as possible.😃

Inform them that they are doing something which even the Church is careful not to do, when they read people’s hearts and intentions and motivations, by calling such people (or the Church) “homophobic.” It’s arrogant to act so sure about why people oppose civil unions.

The Church itself admits that we cannot know the heart of any practicing homosexual–the act itself is sinful, but only God knows each person’s degree of culpability.

Peace.

I’d explain that “civil unions” weaken and undermine marriage, which is regulated by the state, not for the benefit of the adult couple, but for the welfare of children and for the long-term survival of the state. Something around 80% of men in prison come from homes with no father. So we know the benefit of fatherhood. Likewise, who could deny the importance of motherhood. I recently read that the safest place for a child to live is in the home with his two ***married ***biological parents.

Another thing I might do is refer them to the Catholics for the Common Good web page regarding the project, “Standing With Children.”(www.ccgaction.org)).

When people call me homophobic for speaking about the harms of homosexual activity, I say that I care about the welfare of people with same-sex attraction much more than those who discourage their chastity. The group, Courage (www.couragerc.net)), is a great place for spiritual help for people struggling with homosexual temptations.

I would ask them if they know why the Church says what it says. Like, the argumentation.

Seriously, this is one of the best answers I’ve ever read on the CAF.👍

phobia: an exaggerated usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation (Merriam-Webster online)

Uhhhh…why is it that we are called fearful of gays when we say we do not agree with the lifestyle? I am not afraid of any homosexual, nor am I afraid of homosexual unions. Actually, I believe that divorce and infidelity by heterosexuals is more dangerous to the Sacrament of Marriage.

But, I suppose you can counter the label “homophobic” with “heterophobic”.

🤷

I’m confused. What is there to do, but state the truth. The church believes that homosexuality is a sin. period. end of discussion. I’m not sure that the church says this by the way, but the answer is a simple one sentence.

Please explain how homosexual marriage weakens and undermines heterosexual marriage? Marriage is regulated for more than just children. It is regulated for purposes of property, and finances and a plethora of other reasons as well.

Please show the correlation that the 80% of people in prison correlates directly to the lack of fathers in the home. What has this to do with homosexuality? What study was this?

Please show a link to the study that says children are safest with married heterosexual parents as opposed to other relationships, including homosexual ones.

It’s nice you care about their welfare. Perhaps you might ask them what they would consider helpful to their welfare rather than making your own personal deduction.

I would ask them why they’re being so Catholiphobic.

God bless,

Tell them the Church has never officially stated a word about voting for those who support gay civil unions. The church provides general guidelines for our conscience, but has never stated that one can or can not vote for a particular candidate based on their position on a certain topic.

really? i thought just the acts were deemed sinful. i didn’t know that it was the actual make-up* of the person that is deemed sinful.
  • whether genetic… which there is no proof for although there is always the possibility that it could eventually be discovered, or psychological… pretty agree upon that homosexual attraction begins before cognizant choice… meaning that is happens so early that the person is never aware of making a “choice” to be homosexual… which is why they say “i’ve always been this way” because, in a sense, they have

Ha ha, that’s very clever, thanks for the laugh!!!👍 😃

The answer is the Church doesn’t tell anyone that. The position of the Church is that same-sex attraction is a burden placed on some of us – just as violent tempers, attraction to alcohol, drugs, or sex are burdens placed on others.

It is acting out these attractions that is wrong, not having them.

In those situations where homosexual unions have been legally recognized or have been given the legal status and rights belonging to marriage, clear and emphatic opposition is a duty. One must refrain from any kind of formal cooperation in the enactment or application of such gravely unjust laws and, as far as possible, from material cooperation on the level of their application. In this area, everyone can exercise the right to conscientious objection…

I was referring to the act. I assume we all know basic definitions here by now.
