Clapping during the Gloria?

How is letting everyone in the church be pleased with the way they worship not cooperating?

In fact, I feel that if everyone of us were allowed to worship in our own individual way, these types of innovations would stop. People would go to the conservative mass and the other would die out. OR perhaps in this area, people want the clapping. You may feel that this is not appropriate, and I have no experience personally, but this may well be what goes on at a Charismatic Mass. That is fully approved by the Vatican.

What I am saying is if you are offered a conservative mass, even if that is only one of the masses at your parish, count your blessings. You could live in Detroit, Cleveland or many of the other Diocese where finding a mass without clapping and waving is a miracle of God.
I remember one time I was driving through downtown Cleveland. Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

Luckily, I found out later it was only a bullet.

Gloria Gloria

Drives me nuts too, I just sing the Gloria while not participating in the clapping.** I think it would have a place in a Life Teen Mass, but not in your normal Mass.**

Then again, I would prefer more Latin or all Latin anyway.

God Bless
What the . 3^$$#@6?><87%9$5 does tthat mean…

unless you are wisely saming a Life Teen Mass is abnormal!!😉

Clapping has NO PLACE at Mass. ’

We had a male youth choir today… wonderful…

They sang Panis Angelicus after communion… and one by one, the “innovative” members of the parish either knelt, or turned to look into the choir loft.

The pastor returned to his seat after purifing the vessals, hung his head, and was visibly touched… as I certainly was.

After the exit hymn, (priest had already exited), the choir received a well deserved (and properly timed ) applause.

They then sang “What would Jesus Say” (I think that is the title)… and people actually came back into the church to listen and love their voices… and applaud.

Clapping has a place… but it has NO PLACE during Mass.

Hear Fr Groeshel… “… if you must clap during Mass, use one hand…”

Question. If the clapping sound still continued during the gloria, but instead of originating from the congregation, it came from the percussion stop on an elaborate pipe organ, would you guys still be offended?/QUOTE]

The percussion stop on a pipe organ does not sound like clapping. You can tell that it is coming from the Organ. It doesn’t involve any extra actions by the congregation.

Clapping during the Gloria looks and sounds childish. It makes the Mass into a show.

Gosh! This is new to me! I sure hope this doesn’t come to my parish (so far, no “Gloria” clapping 👍 )

On another issue about clapping, our pastor gave the homily today re: our diocese annual Catholic Appeal drive. They applauded him when he came up, and when he left (he’s a pretty dynamic speaker), but he sure did seem uncomfortable with the clapping! I sure hope he says something about it to our congregants.

I’m sorry to interrupt here but those of you who have the option to go to another mass WITHOUT the innovations, need to count your blessings. MANY people here DO NOT have that option.

And what about the people who DO like this form of worship? They should just be disregarded because you want that mass time?

Come on people, this is what cooperation is all about. Go to the less innovative mass. If it is not popular maybe it will be dropped but for goodness sake, that Our Lord that you do have the option to go to a conservative mass!
What drives me crazy is this WAS (by far) our most reverent Mass. This morning we had the clapping and two incompetant altar servers (a boy and girl.)

Satan, Satan, Satan!

It is time to stand up and fight for what is right. My parish would not dream of doing it. **I would suggest that you reach out to the Bishop and let them know what is going on. ** This should put an end to it. You must do something. There is no place for that in the Mass.

Brad
Our bishop is a lame duck (his resignation due to age has been accepted by the Pope) who embraces this sorta sewage.

Clapping during the gloria during the mass isn’t my thing either (although I like it at prayer groups outside of mass). However, its seems to me that its a lot more of a cultural preference then any sort of liturgical abuse, as you guys make it out to be.

Aren’t there more important things out there to get angry about?
Josh
Get your straw-dog “argument” the heck off my thread!

I thought you went to a Reuthenian Catholic church, AltarMan? They do this?

I think you should find like-minded people and complain. You can make it sound reasonable, ie, "Look, this was the last mass that HADN’T turned into the “Howdy Doody Hour,” etc.

Every time I go to a Mass that introduces clapping or other innovations, it is almost embarrassing. Most Catholics do not feel comfortable clapping, swaying, shouting, etc. Usually, there is about 10% participation, but due to the microphones, drums, guitars, etc., the lack of participation is barely noticeable.

Altarman, sounds like you need a new parish—many out my way drive 30-60 mins to attend more “traditional” Masses.

I think those of us who feel that clapping along with the hymns is wrong are justified. When I see many of the people cringing around me at the claps I know I am not the only one uncomfortable with this behavior. In fact, the only people I see participating and smiling with the clapping are the music members and their families. Very few others.

Maybe there should be more cooperation or tolerance of letting others “worship” in a way that lets them express themselves - fine. Go find a happy feely group that wants liturgical dancing, clapping, maracas and guitars. I know that sounds harsh - but I woke up cranky this morning. :o

I guess I would be a little less peeved by all this if we would not have gone from traditional music one Sunday to happy clap party the very next with no warning. If the participants of this new idea truly feel they are doing right - then start another mass time for this type of worship or have the decency and kindness to warn the rest of the parishoners that the most popular mass time of the weekend at our parish is being taken over by a contemporary service of rogue musicians.

I shutter to think that this may somehow find its way into our parish.

So far, our Kumbaya-loving music director hasn’t done it.

Yet.

I
Yeh, maybe

But I hear you really saying that ANYTHING that lesses the REVERENCE due to God at His Mass, must be suspect. And its source must be highly suspect!!

Happy feely people don’t have to go far to be at home… any Yellow Pages lists thousands of protestant communities that would welcome another “misguided” Catholic.

Again I quote from our pastor’s letter in the bulletin yesterday:

“a person whose prayer life is stagnant or non-existent at home, will very likely not find the liturgy vibrant unless it appears to be something more like entertainment than a comtemplation of the Infinite Divine.”

Addressing how you woke up this morning…

Emeril might say…"…let’s crank it up a notch…"

Go for it Your Crankiness

I, too, shutter to think that MY music director is going to find out about this. She worships at the altar of Dan Schutte and David Haas.

Oh please, dear God, don’t let her find out about the clapping Gloria!

Let me state this again.

I DON’T like the Happy Catholic Masses and I can see where people would be upset if suddenly the most popular mass was taken over by Charismatics, BUT some here don’t even have a choice to go to a conservative mass.

Count your blessing and go there.

Ain’t gonna happen. My family has worshipped at this parish for 6 generations. I’ll out-last all those screw-ups!

I am a Latin Rite Catholic but I also attend a Byzantine/Ruthenian Rite parish.

Ours is Gloria (clap, clap, clap), Gloria (clap, clap, clap), in excelsis(sp) Deo (clap, clap clap) and the finale that really gets me is when the Gloria ends and you get the three loud claps :o
They sang it about the same way(G-l-o-r-i-a, clap-clap) at my old parish, when I attended Mass for my Godson’s First Holy Communion. The DRE asked that we also take out our car keys and shake them OR we could clap our hands.:bigyikes: I was really dismayed. Things obviously got worse since I left:(
