Does anyone else feel it a bit wrong to clap for the pianist or the worship team after a song or a solo?

Yeah kinda sorta I dont know. Im a little torn on the issue(cant ya tell ). The song or solo or musical should be for worshipping God–right–so who are we applauding? I know for me Im applauding the person’s performance. Im not really clear on what God thinks about it. There are people in my church who do not applaud.

I usually don’t applaud because I feel as if it takes even the slightest focus off God to praise someone else for a gift that GOD gave them… I dunno…

I don’t applaud for people during the Mass. The Mass should be focused on God. I think it’s nice to tell the soloist/singers later that they did a great job, but the focus is to be on God - it’s not a performance. I don’t think any applause given is meant to be offensive - I’m sure it’s meant well.

I also don’t applaud after the National Anthem is sung. Same theory - the singer is like a conduit.

Then again, I feel even UNWORTHY to utter the words ‘you are worthy’ in singing to God… But that’s a whole OTHER issue… LOL

Yes. That’s why we don’t allow anyone to do solos in our church.

Clapping in Service for the Worship Team

This is a topic that gets batted about quite frequently. For those opposed to applause, is it because of the setting? That it is in church? I was thinking about this in light of going and seeing a rendition of Handels’ Messiah. Certainly there is a lot of applause in that. I wouldn’t think anyone would object to it at all.

Can we agree that the music in Handel’s Messiah is far superior to the vast majority of today’s Contemporary Christian Worship music?

If a piece from Handel was played at church you wouldn’t applaud, but if you paid to see it at a theater you would? It matters what building you’re in?

the congregation is the worship team, if there is such a thing, so why would they be applauding themselves?

As a convert and a musician, I always hated it when people would clap after I played or sang a solo. I felt as if my offering of musical praise had been diminished to an act of entertainment. But one fundamentalist/evangelical church where I would often serve as a guest musician would respond to my solo with a hearty chorus of “Amen,” and I liked that. Don’t praise me because I can sing and play the flute, praise God, who gave me these gifts!

One of our priests (who also plays guitar) will sometimes ask the congregation to “show their appreciation” for the music group at the end of Mass. I don’t much care for that, either. I don’t mind when they do that at Easter and Christmas, when we have worked for weeks to prepare music, because then I feel that it’s more as if they are thanking us for all of our hard work rather than applauding our performance.
