Why do some people say that Catholics are not considered Christians, and other say they are?

Some people are (unfortunately) uneducated, ignorant, or bigoted towards catholics. As the wonderful Archbishop Sheen used to say, there aren’t 100 people in America who hate catholicism for what it is, but millions who hate it for what they believe it to be…
Other protestants/people are educated and charitable in their manner.
We are christians, most certainly, we affirm Jesus as wholly God and wholly man, who is the source of salvific grace for all mankind.

I have no idea…Christians, by definition, are followers of Christ. Catholics are followers of Christ, therefore they are Christians.
Some people say all kinds of weird (and false) things about Catholics.

I actually had to stop in the middle of a conversation with my bigoted protestant BIL and say, “You do know that Christ is the center of the Catholic faith?”
To which he replied in genuine surprise, “Really?”

I wold say this is the best reason. Protestant pators have filled their church’s with Catholic bigotry and lies for 400 years. THe biggest is that Catholics are not Christian and the second is that the faith is not centered on the bible. Both are not true. A Christian is one who follows the word of Christ. which we do, and from Christ we follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit whoc Christ promised to send to give it guidance. As far as scripture, evrey part of the faith is based on both old and new testament, and also traditon that was been given once again over ouor 2000 years history.
Even though the Church since the Second Vatican council has reached out to build bridges, there are those who want to continue with the bogotry, it’s even come out in this election year. We continue to pray for our protestent bretheren and for the day of tolal reunification of Christ’s Church.

Well look at it this way. Anyone who follows Christ is a Christian. And the term Catholic means universal. So ultimately all Catholics are Christians and all Christians are Catholics. That’s all there is to it

Well usually it’s because “Christian” means “follower of Christ” and according to some people we Catholics aren’t true followers of Christ because of some our beliefs or traditions/pratices/customs.
Another reason is because people believe “Christian” is synonymous with “Protestant” this happens a lot at my school. In my school, kids usually ask me “are you Catholic or Christian” Even Catholics have asked me this.
When I try to explain to them that Catholics are Christians, they say “no, Christians sing and rock bands” and a lot of Catholics there say “I’m Christian, I’m Catholic” because they think “Christian” means “Protestant”

I had to do something similar and she is not even a bigoted Protestant. We recently had this discussion and while I will admit that I was surprised to read that anyone had ever heard a Catholic say that he is Catholic, not Christian, I must say that I would think that the number of Catholics who would say that is very small, especially among those Catholics who actually practice their faith. I have never heard any Catholic say such a thing, and anyone who does is just as ignorant as a Protestant who says it.

I know. This just shows that they’re wrong on both respects because a lot of Protestants themselves have low solemn quiet services unlike the “rock n’ roll” and “joyful worship” ones.
You’re right but since I’m in High School, a lot of the Catholics there are non-practicing or not religious. In fact sadly, the Protestants there are more religious than the Catholics. That’s why people thought I was Protestant because I’m the most religious Catholic there.

Being Christian is not just a matter of believing in an idea of Jesus. It means believing in Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the only begotton Son of God the Father who was made Incarnate.Then could someone enlighten me on Mourmons? Mormons don’t believe that very essential part. It would be like me saying, yes I support Obama… but to me Obama is my next door neighbours cat.

The term christian originated in the early church to separate the followers of Christ from the jews! All catholics are christian.
People say many inaccurate things.

Why is it unfortunate?. I am a Catholic. By definition then I am also a Christian. There is really no need to go further with it. Identifying oneself as a Catholic Christian or Christian Catholic or some other made up classification is totally unnecesssary and at least to me seems like the speaker feels the need to say that he or she is both.
One word, Catholic is all that is necessary.

I, too, consider myself to be a Christian, living my faith to the fullest extent, therebuy beign Catholic. The terms, when defined completely are the same, thereby potentially interchangable, in my opinion.
What she menetioned is that some describe themselves as Catholic, and NOT Christian, which I believe is unfortunate.

With all due respect, neither Jesus nor His apostles taught the notion of a final purification after death, or the infallibility of mortal man, or the perpetual virginity of Mary, or the immaculate conception … just for starters. Roman Catholics follow the magisterium and the pope. Not Jesus.
