A local Protestant had an inquiry about self-righteousness.
Someone had told him you make up your own dos and donts for living a Christian life.
Please clarify.

I’m not sure I understand the question.

Is someone asking if we are responsible for our own behavior?

Or that we get to do anything we want because we personally think it’s OK?

Self-righteousness is a condition of spiritual blindness, ignorance about one’s choices. A person may be very resolute and sure about his choices, and be completely wrong, but he thinks he is completely right. A good example was St.Paul, the Apostle to the gentiles. He persecuted Christians because he thought that they were a threat to his traditional beliefs, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He didn’t identify the Jesus was that God. As you know on the road to Damascus, he was struck by a blinding light and fell to the ground, when he heard a voice saying “Paul why are you kicking against the goad?’” and Paul answered “Who are you sir?” I am Jesus, the God of the christians. Paul then realized what he had done. He was enlightened, and he was blinded by the light and wouldn’t eat for three days. He had plenty of time to think of his terrible mistakes, when he was healed by Annanias something like scales fell from his eyes, symbolizing the cure of his spiritual and physical blindness. Self-righteousness is a deeply hidden fault, one of pride, we all have it, and it takes a powerful event to make us realize it because we can not see it in ourselves. eg. Muslims think Christianity is their enemy, because like Paul they are blind to the truth of Jesus Christ, they don’t see Him as the Son of God, the second Person the the Blessed Trinity, and they think they are right. God has to open their eyes to the truth. There are many, many such cases in the world. It’s a consequence of original sin, one of it’s effects is ignorance. It is expressed in a “I am always right” attitude

Self-righteousness is also called Vain glory, the moth that consumes, wood worm. It can lead man into a condition that is very dangerous to his faith. It’s like the story of the little dutch boy who discovered a leak in the mortar of a dam, and he knew that if he didn’t stop it, the whole dam could be destroyed eventually. The culprit is pride deep in the recesses of one’s soul. Pray for humility constantly, Jesus and Mary showed us the way.
