Hello all, yesterday my little sister killed herself. she was a non practicing cradle catholic. she believed in god however battled her whole life with depression. Bi-polar manic depression. i will be going to church here real soon and want to know before i go if she will be in purgatory. she had a hard life here with a continual flow of poor decisions and she leaves behind three kids and her immediate family (all who are practicing catholics).

I’m not sure if I can answer your question, but I would trust in the love of our Lord who knows our hearts, and “wills all to be saved”. I will pray for the repose of your sisters soul and that the Lord will comfort and console you and your family during this difficult time.
May God Bless and keep you

I’m sorry to hear about your loss. I will pray for you and your family. :crossrc:

I don’t know the answer to your question.

we do not know for sure the fate of anyone after death, unless they are proven through the sainthood process of the Church to be in heaven. Do you not think God who loves her takes into account the burdens she was carrying in judging her? Trust her to his merciful providence, there can be nothing more comforting in your pain at this time than that trust.

I believe pazzleannie has it right!
Your sister, you and your family are in our prayers.

Pray for her soul. Do not assume that she is in purgatory but then again, do not assume that she is in hell. Trust God and pray for her soul for as long as it takes for you to feel at ease. Any prayers not used to obtain her release from purgatory, God will direct for whatever needs He see fit.

As puzzleannie says; we cannot know how responsible she was for her action.

Further, there is always at least a brief moment between the time one commits to suicide and one actually dies. Pray that God touched her in that moment and caused her to repent. While I wouldn’t count on that moment for myself, I frequently pray that others had it.

To all of those that are praying for my sister I truley thank you! I have some peace now that I have spoke with my priest and prayed in Adoration. If its not asking to much please continue your prayers and remember Fireman22’s sister during a rosary.

I am so sorry for the loss of your sister.

We cannot know the state of her soul, so the most important thing is to pray for the repose of her soul. Have masses said for the repose of her soul and pray many rosaries. You can also contact nuns (especially contemplative orders such as the Carmelites, Poor Clares) and as for their prayers. Most contemplative orders with web sites have a link to send prayer requests.

No one knows where anyone goes after death. My one daughter is also bi-polar and I believe that our Lord knows the agony these souls go through. They are in such pain and are not always responsible for their actions. Unless one has experienced this disease they have no understanding of how it affects the brain.

I believe that God understands this and does open Purgatory to them. How can we judge people who through no fault of their own are born with mental disorders. They live such horrendes lives that one cannot immagine. They are not in control of their actions many times.

My prayers go out to your sister. Be at peace Jesus is the Divine Mercy and in some ways these poor souls are like children.

I am very sorry for your loss and understand exactly what you and the family has gone through.

God Bless

Bernadette

Friend, your beloved sister shall rest in the glory of God’s mercy, regardless of her fate. He is always wise in judgment and merciful in dealings. Never, ever forget that as you pray for your dear sibling!

Just remember that the Holy Church which God founded upon Peter’s brow has dogmatically defined mortal sin for us. The action must be grave/serious, the actor must have full knowledge of its gravity, and there must be full consent on the person’s part. Now, look at the intensity of bi-polar disorder and tell me there is full consent, or even full knowledge of cognizant actions at times. You can’t tell me that there is full consent for some actions taken while manic or depressive state! There is always hope, for she was a tortured soul, but now all tears are wiped away by the breath of the Holy Ghost upon her being.

My apologies if I sound too scholastic or scientific in classifying your sister, but we must be precise. God is merciful, and His actions in history can be seen and recorded for all to see. If His grace preserved the Blessed Virgin from all sin before birth, His grace can fill your sister for eternity.

Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis

More prayers from here.

The best thing for you to know is that her fate lies in the hands of the One who INVENTED Mercy.
