Hi Guys,
I am registered for a class this semester called Sociology fo Sexualities. The teacher warned us that the book was explicit. I received the book yesterday and thought I would get a jump on the reading and boy was he right. The material is a times erotic and vulgar. I am not sure what to do. Is it wrong to take the class? I am a Sociology minor and as of now there are no more online classes I can take…

Are there any in-class options? Can you wait to take a substitute class next semester and take other needed classes this semester?

I would caution against taking any sociology class in general. In my experience, sociology departments are in the business of doing nothing but promoting falsehoods and corrupting young people’s moral sensibilities.

I can’t see how it would be a sin or anything to take the class. I just don’t see what good could possibly come from it. The devil himself could not have invented a more perfect means of securing the damnation of souls. Perhaps you’ll come out on the other end a stronger Christian for it, but more likely you’ll be tempted (and succumb) to many kinds of sin – lust; anger; cowardice; uncharity; the list goes on.

But then, as a psychology person, maybe I’m just biased. I took a few sociology courses at my college and was nothing short of disgusted by the general degeneracy in the department (made up entirely of fat empiricists who spent the first week of class badgering students to prove that New Zealand exists and doughy, middle-aged lesbians known to be sleeping with their students) and its total lack of methodological and scientific rigor. And this in a school where sociology students received Bachelors of Science degrees while us psych kids, who had to actually originate a line of research, were awarded mere Bachelors of Arts. Pfah!

OK, rant over. Seriously though, I’d just avoid it. Not so much because of the context but because of the kinds of people who tend to teach sociology and the kinds of people who tend to take it.

I have to agree with the above person that sociology is one of the most lightweight fields, unless you must have it for your career, which only would be social worker or govt worker. Or maybe you just like it. But you WILL run into more of that junk, not just sex, pornography, leftist philosophies, etc.

I feel your reaction to the book means the class would not be good for you. If that is just the book, imagine the lectures; your values are going to be challenged and possibly ridiculed.

If you aren’t too far along in your program and units and all that, why not change your minor to business or mathematics or literature or history or even philosophy, something that uses some brain cells and where the serious students are? A minor is irrelevant to your future, except for what you personally get out of it. No one wants to know on your resume, what was you minor?

If this class is not a requirement for graduation, I would drop it. You would probably spend most of the semester disagreeing with the professor and end up with a low grade because of it.

My son took an online sociology course for college credit this summer. What an utterly ridiculous class!

If you go about this right, you can perhaps bring a point of view to the class that otherwise won’t be there.

I always enjoyed bringing my opinions which were many times contrary to the professor or class in general’s beliefs. And to my knowledge, I have never been penalized for disagreeing or having a different opinion.

All you have to do is be respectful in the way you go about it. Basically, don’t give off the impression that you know more than the professor or that you know you are right and that the professor’s morals are bad, etc. Just don’t be arrogant about it, even if you do know that you have the morally sound and correct position.

Always follow instructions that you are given. If the professor says they want a particular point of view or topic discussed or written about, then do it. But passively also state your opinion so that intelligent discussion can be talked about or state it in a way where the professor does not feel that you are insulting his intelligence or status.

So I decided not to take that class. My other sociology classes were no where near that…whatever you wanna call it. It is too late to change my minor because I will be graduating in Dec 🙂 I decided to take a cultural anthropology course and although some might say that’s worse because anthropology teaches evolution… evolution was taught to be in high school and I know it’s not real! I can handle an anthropology book over that sociology book any day.

I’m glad you were able to change the class without affecting your graduation 🙂 That’s great! It’s been a while since I took cultural anthropology, but I don’t remember learning about evolution in it. If they did teach it in my class, they skimmed it. A big part of it was concentrated on different cultures with long histories. I had to read a biography about a young woman amazon.com/Nisa-Life-Words-Kung-Woman/dp/0674004329/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314116974&sr=8-1 It’s been years and years, but I enjoyed reading the book. I had to answer questions about the book and write a paper.

Evolution is not inconsistent with Catholicism.

Cultural anthropology, good for you. I imagine that will be more interesting and have more variety anyway!

You may not believe in evolution, but don’t dismiss those who do believe. Evolution is fully in line with the Church’s teachings.

I’d say get out of the class right away. If you want to explain to the professor why you are doing so, and if it an online class, say so in the forums and message boards. Just be clear that you are offended by the material that is being taught in the class and you wish to leave if the curriculum is not changed immediately. If all else fails, go find another school that isn’t so rotten and erotic and start applying now. You can go to the President of the college, or email him or something. Just be civil about it. You don’t have to say anything harsh, such as I have done very often in these forums. I’ve learned my lesson. Don’t make the same mistakes I did here.

I will pray for you that you find a solutions to this problem. if you want any further advice you can contact me by private message. I have a lot of experience in challenging professors on their morality and honestly been successful at getting professors to change their curriculum many times. I know how to do it very well, and I can give you some suggestions if you need any.

God bless you and good luck in your studies
Joshua

Just my :twocents: but Sociology in and of itself is not bad. Sociology is simply the study of group behaviour, whereas psychology is the study of individual behaviour. There are bad Sociology courses, just as there are bad Psychology classes, bad History classes, bad Anthropology classes and so on. Any subject matter can be perverted, and any subject matter that has a subjective component can be taught in a negative manner. My advice, as a person who also minored in Sociology would be to stick to non-explicit courses (and you may find and Sociology of Family classes difficult as well if you have a very liberal prof). And I never once had a prof who was a “fat empiricist” or a “middle-aged lesbian”
