My father-in-law got me the “Listener’s Collection of Classic Christian Literatre Narrated by Max McLean” on cd’s for Christmas. The cd’s included are: St. Augustine’s Conversion, Martin Luther’s Here I Stand, Jonathan Edwards’ Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, George Whitefield’s The Method of Grace and John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress.
I’ve listened to the Augustine one, the Luther one and am currently listening to Edwards. Is there any reason or benefit for me listening to these Protestant writings? Save St. Augustine, of course. I’m also in the process of reading St. Augustine’s Confessions.
MY reasoning for listening to them is (1) become better educated about Protestantism; (2) strengthen my Catholic Faith. The errors in the different Protestant theologies are jumping out at me. I was listening to “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” while driving early this morning, and one of the things I got out of it is that it reinforces the truth that Hell is real and my desire to stay out of it! I don’t agree with Edwards’ theology on how to stay out of it, but he does paint a descriptive picture of it.
The other thing that kept running through my mind while listening to it was that it was Edwards’ own, fallible interpretation of Scripture on salvation, so why would I want to rest my salvation on his theology?
Anyway, just interested in some thoughts on a Catholic listening to these cds. Thanks.
