I think over the years I have found all the easiest ones and I put them right in front of me if I play for memorial or something. It prevents stage fright because if I get brain freeze the music is right in front of me.

I also try to memorize a few.

A niece of mine had the same issue. Even when she knew them by heart, she needed the lyrics there.
Now she is confident without them.

Here is another one by Tarrega. Beautiful.

Capricho Árabe( Jürgen Rost in guitar)

You said you play for Memorial services and deaf seniors. That is a generous gift that must be very appreciated…

Did you hear any performances? I try and just dont sound like them. That is, someone who actually has had formal studies. I am just a big kid having fun with it.

Only on TV. I can remember seeing a Westerner play, and quite well, to my ears. His Japanese was also fluent. There are videos on YouTube.

I love flutes in general. Back in my Protestant days I wrote contemporary and southern Gospel songs. One of them was recorded professionally by a local singer, and lo and behold, for the instrumental break the producer had someone playing jazz on a bass flute. I couldn’t stop grinning 😃

I like the deeper flutes. Shakuhachi is pretty deep. I am not a big fan of Native American flutes which are more popular now. I woul like to get an Indian bansuri.

So you play shakuhachi? Your profile name makes sense now. I was perplexed when I first saw it. As well as the instrument ‘shakuhachi’ has another meaning in Japanese…

What is that other meaning? “Foot and a half”?

😮

I Was afraid of something like that. I asked a few people if I they would like to see my shakuhachi. Now I just say “Japanese flute”.

For the record, the characters are 尺八. The first is the Japanese foot (a measure of length), and the second is 8.
