Does anyone know if it is appropriate to place a classified ad in the newspaper looking for a Catholic priest to celebrate a nuptial Mass for a couple seeking marriage?
The problem is that this couple belongs to a parish that has lay people or a nun give a talk instead of a homily. The couple would like a priest who will do everything a priest is suppose to do. Also - this problem is prevalent throughout the diocese. It seems that the couple would almost have to put a classified ad in the local paper or another diocese to find a priest who will be - a priest.
Any suggestions?

I’m not sure how the classified ad should be worded. I’m open to suggestions. Perhaps I could place an ad in the local diocesan paper - if they would let me.

You could ask the diocese priests if they’ll do a Mass for you 🙂

A Priest from another Diocese would need permission to celebrate Mass from the Bishop where he is visiting. If you know a Priest elsewhere, it would be okay to ask him to come and celebrate the wedding.

Have you talked to your Priest about the order of service for your wedding? That seems to be the first step.

If you put an ad in the paper, the odds are strong you will here from a passel of “rent-a-priests.” These are priests who left the priesthood for a variety of reasons, and now supplement whatever it is they do for a living with weddings. They do not have faculties to perform weddings, despite their ads that say they do.

Best bet? Go talk to the priest wherever your parish is now. Get married there with as little fuss as possible (no Kumbayah Chorus, nuns giving the nuptial homily, or what have you).

If you still have major trouble with your Mass or ceremony outside of Mass, then postpone your wedding and parish shop, making sure when you register in the new parish to tell them you have been members of St. Umtefratz (or whatever your current parish is) and how many years you were there, so they can verify it. Then, meet their requirements for marriage.

Another alternative: If you live near the border of two dioceses (example: A lot of people in Illinois live not five miles away from the Diocese of Rockford in the Diocese of Joliet, but are registered in parishes in Rockford, which is more conservative, and also not five miles away from the Archdiocese of Chicago), you could go check out the parishes in the dicoese next door, register, and domarriage prepr and respect the rules of that diocese, perhaps even moving there upon marriage.

Just an idea and my :twocents:

No it is not appropriate.

The priest of the parish in which either the bride or the groom resides has authority over them regarding marriage preparation and the celebration of the Mass.

The couple in question should make an appointment with their priest.

The couple should leave the parish and go elsewhere. The fact that the particular parish is already committing a liturgical abuse by having someone other than an ordained member of the clergy delivering a “homily” is already a huge, red flag.

They should contact the chancery office and ask for assistance. The chancery is the best point of reference.

Thanks to all giving advice.
Certainly the temptation to draw attention to a sore and sick area in my diocese is great. An ad in the local newspaper would draw some attention and maybe even make a few uncomfortable. I’m not even sure any priest would respond.
It is a sad day when one must entertain something so fantastic in an effort to find a priest to celebrate Mass in the order it is suppose to be celebrated.
Cannon Laws have been twisted and abused for more than a decade here. Sheer disobedience and human willfulness runs blindly and wildly like a dead man riding a horse in the dark.

Sometimes it is possible to have a priest or monk from a religious order with faculties within the diocese celebrate a wedding Mass. It has been my experience that a majority of priests from monastic orders are much more orthodox.
A priest in goodstanding with the Church probably would not answera a classified ad.

Why don’t they ask the parish priest where they live?

Or maybe they think he no make strong juju?
