Classifying Sins

I try and go to confession with some regularity. But when I examine my conscience I’m not sure exactly what the name of my sin is. For example, was I gossipping or detraction?

I guess I know I’m guilty of probably a lot of sins but not really what to say or call it other than "didn’t do God’s will at all times and/or I probably could act better… or looking at an examination list and thinking "yeah I’ve probably thought or done that to some degree but don’t remember any specific instance but know I tend to have a problem with those sins…

Also I have trouble knowing if I really did commit a sin and just tell myself I’m human and didn’t really engage the will. I know I’m clearly sinful but have trouble with the examination part and need help. Ive asked priests but I always seem to get different responses.

One time i confessed being angry at my kids and yelling at them for being bad and he treated it like i was a monster doomed to hell had i not confessed this “mortal” sin.

When I swore, was it sinful and is that cursing?
And not liking someone alot and believing they should be fired due to incomptence and negligence is that sinful?

And yes I struggle with scrupples so I do what is recommended and don’t fight it. But then I worry I’ve swung too far to the other side believing something isn’t sinful when it really is.

While sins can be classified in a number of ways, or fall under categories that trace back to the commandments, it is easier for most people to just list their sins, much as you just did. Don’t worry if something is venial or or mortal, just talk to your priest. Keep it simple.

If you suffer from scruples then you must know you should be discussing these things with a regular confessor and sticking with his advice rather than coming here.

Coming here to discuss these things means you just gave in to scruples.

Did I say you need a regular confessor and stick with his advice?
