Clean and Unclean

My moms friend at work keeps telling her that Christians are not allowed to eat pork or shellfish (there is more but thats all I can remember at the moment) that God demands not to eat unclean animals.

I told her that in the New Testament I thought Jesus said we can eat the unclean animals. So could someone tell me where it is so I can show my mom (and ease my mind as well)

I eat alot of shrimp, lobster, etc… now I am confused and wondering if I am in mortal sin :eek:

It sounds like your mum’s friend is imposing Kosher law onto a Christian. We are not bound by Jewish law.

There are no clean or unclean foods for Christians.
 
As for something you can show your mum…try the catechism. I am darned sure there is nothing there about foods which are not to be eaten.😉

It might be easier for your mum to ask her friend where SHE is getting her information. I am actually curious.

I suspect it might be the private thoughts of a Protestant Christian who has decided to embrace Jewish roots.

There’s nothing really wrong with that, as far as I know, but it is not a requirement. We are bound by the New Covenant, which was brought into effect by Christ. The Old Covenant has passed away.
 
Well she tells my mom to not damage our bodies… my mom just told me now that she gave her a booklet called Death in the Kitchen and so 10 minutes ago looked it up on the internet… apparently written by a Seventh Day Adventist. I just had to see where she is getting this information, I told her unless its written by a RC theologian it has no credibility with me.

I need to find the scripture where Jesus says we are allowed to eat clean and unclean. She is asking me and I forgot where I read it as I am almost positive I am right. I need to read it again for myself because maybe I misunderstood the reading. Gosh I hope not I sure love my shellfish.

Thanks for telling me where to look in the bible. If this is the response “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean” how do we know what is now clean that was once considered unclean?

I’m really going to need back up on this one. My mom was really argue about this with me yesterday.
 
While there are some Christian groups who seek to follow Mosaic Law, it is required under the New Covenant.

Examples from Scripture…
Mt 15:10-11
And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: ( it is) not what goes into the mouth defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”
Acts 10:11-15
…and saw the heaven opened, and something descending, like a great sheet, let down by four corners upon the earth. In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. And there came a voice to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” But Peter said, “No, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.” And the voice came to him again a second time, “What God has cleansed, you must not call common.”
Acts 15:10
Now therefore why do you make trial of God by putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? (Peter speaking to those the Judaizers who would require Gentiles to become Jews first)
1 Cor 6:12

These are some examples of how the Old Covenant requirements were not transferred to the New Covenant.

Aha! I found the scripture that I personally thought we were allowed to eat foods such as shellfish:

1 Timothy 4:3-5

Now I have to go call my mom and prove my point. 👍

If another challenge comes up you can use verses about Church authority too, and 'How old is your church?" Jesus Christ only founded one Church after all. 🙂

She is dealing with SDA’s so the how old is your church won’t work. remeber we have gone apostate.
