i’m personally not christian but i hold most christian values. do you know how i can find artists who don’t sing about sex and drugs while still not singing only about spirituality? no offense to spiritual people; i like diversity in my lyrics

There are masses, you just need to listen to stuff that isn’t in the charts. For example, a lot of folk musicians sing about important issues they see in the world, often moral ones. I reccommend Tracy Chapman, Thea Gilmore and some golden oldies like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan.

Not happy with the recommendations in your other thread? 😛 😉

I pretty much made all my recommendations in the other thread, but hopefully you’ll get some more feedback in this one. :o

Just curious why you put Catholic for religion yet claim not even to be Christian? Glad you embrace some of our values, maybe look deeper into the Catholic Church, you just might find what you are looking for.

Well, let’s see…on my Ipod right now, I have Fireflies by Owl City, Handlebars by Flobots, a lot of Nightwish and Within Temptation, Taylor Swift and Keith Urban. There’s Citizen Soldier, I hope you Dance, When Angels Fly Away, You’re Gonna Go Far Kid (edited version) American Pie, In the Air Tonight, a lot of music by Rie Fu, Toby Keith, there’s some Creed and older Nickelback, before they started singing about prostitutes and strippers…Really, I can think of only one song on my iPod that gets a little…raunchy. There’s PLENTY of songs that aren’t sexual or perverted. All the ones I listed, they may be dark, or forbodeing, or creepy, but none are sexual, explicit… in fact, only one even has a swear word, and my version has it edited out.

Unsure of what exactly your looking for, but here’s a list of bands that I believe are clean:

The Beatles - I’m sure you know this one.

Blind Guardian - German power metal band. Most of their lyrics are fantasy related (they have an entire album dedicated to Lord of the Rings. The lead singer is also Christian, probably Catholic. They have several Christian-themed songs.

Dream Theater - A progressive metal band. I’m not too familiar with them yet, but they don’t seem like the type of group to sing about sex and drugs. The band consists of Jews and Christians with the lead guitarist being Catholic, but I’m unaware of their lyrical meanings.

Iron Maiden - Despite a somewhat infamous reputation, this group is clean and intelligent. Many songs are about historical events, books, movies, etc. I can’t think of anything specific dealing with drugs and sex. While Bruce Dickinson may swear in concert, they don’t in their music. They have some songs on religion which might be a bit negative (one line referring to Catholic greed in the song Montsegur), but they’re based on historical truths. There’s a song called For the Greater Good of God which is about fighting wars in God’s name, but ends with the lines “He gave his life for us he fell upon the cross, To die for all of those who never mourn his loss, It wasn’t meant for us to feel the pain again, Tell me why, tell me why”. Also, the song Sign of the Cross seems to be about redemption. The band members keep their personal beliefs secret, but the drummer is a practicing Christian.

Savatage - Another great metal band (if you’re into that thing). Their earlier, more metal songs have some sex and drugs references, but their entire second album (actually an EP) uses metaphors of hell to describe the use of drugs. Their later stuff is more progressive and you’d probably enjoy the album Streets: A Rock Opera which has a hopefully sound throughout (and isn’t really even metal). Also check out Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the group they morphed into. Savatage’s first lead singer now has a group called Jon Oliva’s Pain and his Global Warning album contains a lot of hopeful religious messages and mentions of Christ (but also has some harsh screaming in a couple songs).

The White Stripes - An indie, blues-rock duo. Amazing guitarist in Jack White and they have simple lyrics. Nothing religious, but also nothing overtly sexual that I can think of.

Goo Goo Dolls. Some of it might be a bit questionable, but most of their songs are pretty. Iris, and the song “Better Days”. A lot of really pretty love songs.

Dream Theater - A progressive metal band. I’m not too familiar with them yet, but they don’t seem like the type of group to sing about sex and drugs. The band consists of Jews and Christians with the lead guitarist being Catholic, but I’m unaware of their lyrical meanings.
I like your picks. 🙂

Dream Theater does a great job in the lyrics department, IMHO. The only “sex & drugs” related songs they have are those songs warning against alcohol abuse (as their drummer is a recovering alcoholic). They even have a Twelve Step Suite (five songs over the course of five albums) which chronicles a person’s journey through the 12 Steps. I love the closing verses of “The Glass Prison”:

*The glass prison which once held me is gone
A long lost fortress
Armed only with liberty
And the key of my willingness

Fell down on my knees and prayed
“Thy will be done”
I turned around, saw a light shining through
The door was wide open*

Their songs are all pretty clean and well written. They’re not usually overtly religious, but they’re not generally problematic either.

CRADLE OF FILTH. Lyrics may get a bit sexual at times, but they never speak of drugs and don’t really delve all too much into spirituality. I’d also reccomend Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom, Absu, Deicide, those bands generally don’t have much on sex, drugs, or spirituality;)

Fernando Ortega – some religious songs, but mostly nature & celebrating the joys of family.
