Mostly I’m trying to help my parents find some things to watch and read that do not have the following: illicit sex, violence, swearing, upsetting or gross imagery, etc. Mostly nice stories that are not disturbing. This is especially important for my father who grew up in a extremely abusive home and who at 64 can sadly still get nightmares when he sees triggers. It doesn’t have to be Catholic or Christian, but more Christian-friendly. They tend to like sweet romance stories and fantasy-genre/action stories. Some examples: Elf, Pride & Prejudice, anything EWTN. They tend to like newer things…I guess they’ve seen the old things too many times :D. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated 👍.

There are online websites, including the Catholic Bishops Conference, that review tv and current movies. They are helpful. Even tho these shows are “old”, you can purchase or rent old tv series like I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, All in the Family, that are clean humor and still good after many years. The 1940 & 50’s classic movies are great and are broadcast every afternoon on the Turner Classic Movies channel. Many are romances. Disney makes wonderful family-friendly movies. If they like animation, Ice Age and anything by Pixar is good, funny, clever and entertaining. National Geographic has excellent nature documentaries to rent or watch on cable. I’m in this age category and enjoy these!

Oh, books…libraries have lists of recommended reading for most any category, such as young adult, which might be good, safe, choices. Also, Amazon will have reading lists and reviews by readers to help you choose something your parents might enjoy.

I really like “Person of Interest” with Jim Caviezel as main actor. He played Jesus in the passion.

It’s somewhat violent though but not graphic.

Dr Quinn medicine woman, which only airs on INSP and UP(lifting entertainment) now. Just basic Wild West violence (some Indian and soldier fights, some doctoring surgeries) . One episode deals with child abuse ( a teacher slaps students cruelly) and one uses evolution to help get a child away from abusive guardian.

The Cosby show (repeats on tv land)

Not sure on books since I tend to stick to young adult and kids books I know should be clean.

Most of Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli) films can be recommended. Some have some violence in them, such as depictions of war, but not glorified and limited. Fantasy is plentiful. Romance also occurs. Sex does not.

The Hallmark Channel has some original, usually romantic, made for tv movies; they also have Little House on the Prairie on The Waltons on most afternoons. The Game Show Network has some cute shows also.

You said that they’re looking for new stuff, not old.

Try the new CBS series, Scorpion. It’s about a Special Agent (played by my favorite actor, Robert Patrick, the “Terminator”!) who recruits a group of “brainy” young people (genius-level IQs) to help him combat terrorism in the U.S. Their first “case” happens in a restaurant, and the waitress (Katherine McPhee, the 2nd place American Idol winner) has a son that she thinks is autistic, but he turns out to be a genius.

Usually my favorite actor is in uplifting shows, although they can be gritty. From what I’ve seen of the previews, the show seems to be more “brain” then “brawn.” Kind of like “MacGuyver,” where he uses his wits to figure out how to defeat the bad guys! I like seeing smart people lauded!

And of course, I’m so proud of Robert Patrick for getting this role!

(Wow, I can’t believe it’s been over a year since I last logged on! Should start coming here more often…)

To be honest, I don’t watch as much TV or movies as I used to. The media in general has become so corrupt and immoral, from “reality” TV to Game of Thrones, that it no longer appeals to me. However, there are some gems in the dirt out there, so I will give you some examples of those here.

TV Shows
PowerPuff Girls
Most other CN shows before 2010 (Adventure Time, etc.)
Sailor Moon (edited English dub)
Pokèmon
Other clean anime
SpongeBob (pre-movie '99-'04] if possible; the newer episodes aren’t worth it)
Avatar: The Last Airbender
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Gravity Falls
(some scenes may scare younger children)
Anything on Disney Junior/Nick Jr.
BabyFirstTV
PBS Kids
The Adventures of Merlin (just finished watching it on Netflix)
Gilligan’s Island
*The Munsters *
The Monkees
Batman
(1966)
Davey and Goliath
Other 60’s sitcoms

Movies
Disney/Pixar animated movies (except Black Cauldron)
Hayao Miyazaki movies
DreamWorks movies
Most Godzilla movies

Books
Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Maximum Ride
Peanuts
comics
The Bible (though not everything mentioned in there is clean, of course)
Any books that Catholic Answers sells

Those are just some that I can think up off the top of my head. USCCB and decentfilms.com reviews movies, and commonsensemedia.org reviews shows, movies, games, etc. Hope this helps anyone here trying to dodge the current media trends.

WKRP In Cincinnati. One of the best sitcoms ever, IMO. Apparently it may be released on DVD with the original licensed music.

The Carol Burnett Show. She proved that variety was not dead. My favourite bits are always Tim Conway trying – and usually succeeding – at cracking up the rest of the cast.

Father Brown Mysteries. Not sure how faithful it is to GKC’s original, but still very good. It’s on PBS Detroit.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The ones with the incomparable Jeremy Brett. To me, he is and always shall be, the “real” Holmes.

Poirot. With David Suchet. Yadda yadda yadda the “real” Poirot. 😃

Murdoch Mysteries. CSI meets The Road to Avonlea. A detective in late Victorian/early Edwardian Toronto solves crimes using forward-thinking forensic techniques. Cameo appearances by (actors playing) Winston Churchill, Nicola Tesla, Jack London, Buffalo Bill, Conan Doyle, etc.

Corner Gas. The daily weirdness of the denizens of a small town in Saskatchewan. Personally, I think it is probably the best TV show ever produced in Canada.

Moviewise, I really liked Secondhand Lions. A young boy (Haley Joel Osment) is sent by his neglectful mother to live with his two eccentric uncles (Michael Caine and Robert Duvall). Heartwarming and a hoot, too.

👍👍👍 I highly approve of your TV and movie tastes, John Lazarus.

I love Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett and David Suchet’s Poirot. I’ve watched so many episodes of these shows…I just can’t get enough of them. So yes, these are highly recommended! Even the opening sequence and music for them are amazing.

And good ole’ Corner Gas! I love its gentle and somewhat wacky humour. You just can’t beat Oscar when he’s getting riled up over nothing. 😃
