I have some icons and over time I’ve noticed that they have gotten a bit dirty with dust and the smoke of incense and candles and some have some have gotten a little splattered with wax.

Is there any way I can clean my icons without damaging the paint?

Unless you know how (and when) the icon was made, what medium was used and what sort of varnish was applied (if any), it is probably best to consult an expert. It is not difficult to do more harm than good.

Most of them were made (or written as the Easterns say) in the last few years. I do not have the money, nor do I know where, to aquire any antique, or even higher-quality, icons.

isn’t rosewater used? Literally just water with rose petals distilled in it for scent? I guess it depends on if and what they are varnished with,
