I am cleaning out my closet so I can replace what clothes need replacing. Basically I am flushing out my wardrobe then fleshing it out. I have a couple of questions cos I am a guy and know nothing about this stuff lol.

How much clothes should I have? I have heard I should have enough clothes to go a week with out doing laundry and I have heard I need enough for two weeks. I have no clue lol

I think this is going to be dependent on what you can afford. Generally I think you need more shirts than pants. The guys I know can wear their pants for two days but only wear a shirt once before it is washed.
I also imagine it depends on the kind of work you do. If the work exposes you to dirt and stuff than you may not be able to wear the pants more than once.
It is more efficient to wash full loads of laundry so I know people who stock up on whites to get full loads. Check out LLBEAN or Lands End one of them used to make recommendations for building a men’s wardrobe with interchangeable suit coats, slacks, ties, shirts.
And my final recommendation is have more socks than you think you’ll need and have those all match because invariably some of them disappear.

Well, start by donating stuff that no longer fits. My boyfriend at least has three drawers full of pants that no longer fit. He thinks that he will some day lose weight and fit in these pants he hasn’t worn sine high school. He’ll be 25 soon.

If you haven’t worn it in a year, you probably can donate it as well.

After this, see what you have left. I would personally want more than 2 weeks worth of tops at least because of how much the temperature varies here. There are days wear it is 90 and days when it is -15.

I think it’s really up to you. I probably have enough to go two week without washing clothes. There are always basics you need like dress clothes, jeans, shirts, etc. but there is always such a thing as too much. Again you’re probably the best judge of that. My rule of thumb with dress clothing is if I haven’t worn it in a year I probably don’t need it (exceptions are if you don’t dress up much at this time in your life). That can apply to really any type of clothing. It’s better to replace parts of your wardrobe instead of replacing it all at once because replacing clothing can be quite costly if at one time.

Don’t just throw the clothing away! 🙂 So many charities are available to give the clothing to other people. Many will come straight to your door and pick it up! What I’ve started doing is I just keep a bag that I put out for the Leukemia society or other organizations that pick clothing up from the doorstep. I’ll drop some clothing in the bag every few months so I don’t have to go through a massive closet clean out. Then when they come usually a few times a year I have something to put out. Your local parish probably has suggestions on where to take the clothing as well. 😉

When my husband moved here from England it was extremely expensive for him to ship his belongings. So he decided to spend the money on shipping things that mattered to him, and not shipping any clothing. He literally came here with the clothes on his back. 🙂

It took me about a year before his arrival (we were engaged at that time) to shop for and purchase an entire wardrobe for him. I am the QUEEN of budget shopping, resale shops, and estate sales. 😃 So trust me, this was not as expensive as you might think when stretched out over a year. (And I had a TOTAL blast doing it!!!)

Anyway - I made sure that he had the following:

Two weeks of underwear
One week of undershirts
Three weeks of socks
One week of jammy pants/boxers for sleeping & one bath robe & slippers
One pair of swimming trunks
One week of trousers (as well as three pair of jeans)
Two weeks of dress shirts
Two weeks of casual shirts (polo and T-shirts)
Two pair of shoes
Three sweaters
Three suits and one blazer

Since then I’ve increased the dress shirts to three weeks of shirts so I always have some at the cleaner, some on the hanger, and some ready to go to the cleaner. I don’t do his shirts any more, we take them and have them done. And also increased to two weeks of trousers.

He works in an office job that is business casual.

But, as someone already mentioned, it really depends on what works for you. This works for our crazy lifestyle which does not allow me a guaranteed day every week to do laundry and a lot of late nights, and never knowing if he is going to need to be more dressed up one day than the next for meetings or whatever.

Cleaning out the closet is a very good idea - don’t forget to donate!!

Yeah I tend to wear my pants 3 or 4 days in a row lol. Except my work pants. I am studying to become a mechanic and thanks to sweat oil and grease I can normally only get 2 days in a row out of them

I got a question about sizes. I currently wear XL t shirts. But I have noticed lately that some of them when I lift my arms or bend down to tie my shoes the shirt rise up to the top of the waste band on my pants. but when I am just standing or siting there fine…Should I go the next size up or are they suppose to fit like that?

I’m no expert, but I do ok when it comes to style. I lean to the preppy side.

Here I say go to the next size up. Just bite the bullet and do it. Guys are reluctant to do it because its an admission that ya gained weight. It looks bad when clothes fit too tight.

I agree. Not worn in a year? Out it goes.

Well I dont do the preppy thing lol. The reason I asked about the size thing is because not everyone of my shirts do it. And the ones do only started after being in the dryer. And I have not gained weight lol.

In either case ya don’t want them riding up when your reach for something LOL.

I so agree! Think of all the bending you will be doing as a mechanic. The world does not need to see your … umm … the place where your gluteus maximus muscles meet! Arrr!

P.S. It’s “Talk Like A Pirate Day.” Can you tell?

Arrr, you… t’ h***…ai-eee!

Bulldawg, I don’t know how tall you are, but you might try shopping for those undershirts at a tall man’s shop for the extra length. Also some brands of undershirts come in extra long, you might find some if you look around. My husband has this problem because he is long in the trunk and his waist is low, regular length undershirts aren’t long enough for him. Hope this helps.
