Cleaning Sacred Vessels

I never said it was demeaning. Just a little weird. I have never before heard anyone refer to the chalices as “cups”, and I have been hanging around sacristies for many years.

Well, let’s just say there is another end of the spectrum, where you are relieved if the help know to say “purificator” unstead of “whatchamacallem…you know, those little towel thingies”.

The vocabulary is important, but if the extraordinary ministers have the actions of reverence right, if they go about assisting the priest reverently at Mass and doing their work with the sacred vessels in a sober manner that is knowledgeable with regards to actions if not words, that is the main thing. I think the vocabularly is important because it supports the special dignity of the sacred objects being handled and the work being done, but the exact words are less important than the action and that there be an attitude of latria shown the Blessed Sacrament and mutual fraternal charity among the baptised.

The EM’s (as they call themselves) at my cathedral parish constantly complain about whose turn it is to “do the dishes” after Mass. I find great consolation in driving across town to the Dominican parish instead, where the friars show great reverence and respect to our Blessed Sacrament both during and after Mass.

This is fascinating! In my parish, we do not use soap of any kind. The water is indeed far too hot to touch, and the ciboria and chalices and cups are entirely smooth, at least where at mouth would be. We dry with a soft dish towel.Cheap Coach PursesCoach outlet storesCoach Factory Outlet store
