Hello!
So I have OCD and anxiety, and when I have a question and can’t find answers for it I kinda panic, haha. Please don’t come at me, this may be a silly question! 🙂
Is it ok for a woman to wear men’s t-shirts and hoodies? I have my whole life, specifically for modesty and comfort (men’s clothing covers more and makes me more comfortable), and because the men’s section has all the good graphic tees lol. It’s the same cut as the unisex shirts…and I never saw anything wrong with it. But now I’m wondering!
And, this question may be even sillier, but I also saw a site saying that women should never wear pants…any truth to this? Maybe I should just get off the internet haha.
Thank you! 🙂

The Church teaches ‘modesty in dress’. The Church doesn’t teach that woman cannot wear slacks. I know Padre Pio was against it. I know many Catholics claim that you shouldn’t but it’s not Church Teaching. You can check out the Catechism online. Stick with that. Or Canon Law. Anything added to those things are personal opinion, so we have no obligation to obey personal opinion. And if anyone gives you a hard time, just point out that St. Joan of Arc wore men’s clothing when she rode into battle. 😉

My friend, this is your OCD talking. WHY would these things be wrong?? If you can’t think of a realllllly good reason, tell that Worry Monster to get lost so you can get on with your beautiful day!

lwest: Thank you so much for the reply!! I appreciate it so much. What you said is very true, I sometimes tend to take opinions too seriously! You’ve lifted my anxiety a ton, thank you! 😃

St. Joan of Arc wore women’s clothes when she wasn’t in battle.

Anonkun: Yeah, that was my thought! Like, men’s hoodies and tees are the same as the unisex option. Thank you! 🙂

Yes you can wear these things. It’s absolutely not a sin. I know how you feel… I went through this. You need to stop researching and only go to your priest and trust what he says.

You are doing well 🙂 stress about this no longer!!!

God loves you

Thank you so much, Megan! That is also very good advice, haha, I research too much and end up making my thoughts worse! 😉
Thank you, you’re very kind! <3

Yes!! It’s very very tempting to search. I know the struggle 😦 you just have to remind yourself that it isn’t good for you and you’re likely to come across something that will disturb you. There’s nice people on the internet but there’s also people who write crazy stuff!!! And it triggers scruples!!

I will pray for you 💖

I’m not sure on this one. To me it doesn’t seem fair beca a guy wanted to wear a cute dress or women’s outfit it would most definitely be seen as a sin. I guess it seems kind of one-sided.

Because if a man does that he looks like a cross dresser. But men’s clothing is often uni sex. So the woman still looks like a woman

Please don’t encourage scrupulosity by saying you’re not sure on this one. It’s not a sin for her to wear men’s tshirts. There’s women’s tshirts that look exactly the same

Yes, it’s fine. I wear unisex T shirts and hoodies almost every day, including to Mass.

I have a few “women’s cut” shirts but they tend to hug the body, which often is less comfortable or more revealing than I want. I prefer comfortable loose clothing most days. I also have a large bust and need at least a 2XL women’s cut shirt because they tend to be sized for petite skinny ladies. Often 2XL women’s cut is not available or even when it is, it fits like wallpaper.

And yes, unisex graphic tees are often much better designed and more available than the ones for “women only”.

Thank you so much! I totally agree, women’s cut t-shirts for some reason just bother me. Everyone tee I’ve had is very thin, and hugs my body, making me feel immodest. And the necks are always huge on me for some reason. And the designs just aren’t as cool haha.
By the way, I love your profile pic!!

Thank you so much, Megan!
I would really appreciate your prayers, I struggle with scruples a lot, it’s so tiring and wears me down, but it’s SO helpful to hear reassurances. 🙂 You all are very kind!
God bless! 🙂 <3

If the man was decently covered, it’s debatable whether this would be seen as a “sin”.

I’ve known a number of skinny men who could and did wear some women’s clothing (such as blouses, tunics, or even stretch pants) for fashion purposes with no cross-dressing intent. Unless you knew that they borrowed the clothing from their girlfriend, you wouldn’t even recognize their outfits as women’s wear.

I’ve also known men who liked wearing skirts or kilts or kimonos or muu muus because they found them physically more comfortable than pants, again with no cross-dressing intent. There are companies that make skirts and kilts cut and sized for men, but again if a guy is skinny he can likely find some of these clothing items that fit him at Goodwill or Walmart for cheaper.

Cross-dressing is a different situation from just wearing clothes of the opposite gender for comfort or fashion. However, I’ve seen obviously cross-dressed men, dressed conservatively (nothing flashy or revealing) at Catholic church services.
