Clown Mass? What is it?

Well, just for the benefit of the doubt, I went and checked it out

and there is a lot wrong with this. A lot. I don’t even think we would have to list everything that is wrong…
THE MASS IS NOT SOMETHING TO ENTERTAIN YOU…IT IS A SACRAFICE…A HOLY SACRAFICE.
It is true that the Mass is not something we should mess around with and turn into “entertainment”. I also don’t think we should dredge up old issues and report them around as if they were happening everywhere and happening still. This event occurred several years ago (even 10 years ago now?), the worst abuses were confined to a few specific dioceses/parishes, and I’m sure that the priests and people in question have been suitably chastized. It’s time to move forward and not keep looking back.

Don’t forget this one: A halloween Mass with a devil distributing communion. In fact, I think this is the one with quite a few devils in the crowd.

I will have to disagree with you on several points. There is a line to what is appropriate and what is not. I was once a life guard which is a respectable profession too. You cross the line when you dress up as clowns, witches goblins or whatever.

But, I think the clown mass they were referring too is what Brother Rich mentioned, when the priest adds and subtracts whatever he wants to, it becomes goofy and silly.
Point taken :). I see what you mean now.

Ok, this is part of the gospel and the homily. This mass is different than the usual picture floating around on the internet. There is a good message coming through the homily. The priest does get involved partway into it. He is using the lay youth as visual props to help get his message across. It is a unique way to get with the tolerance message of that specific week in the liturgy. The clown is a visual prop in this instance as a eye-catching way to show differences and to see how they are reacting to them.

From the way the mass is going the Liturgy of the Eucharist to go as normal. The visual prop of the clown is not needed in this section of the mass.

Now I do disagree with this. If the Mass was said for a Clown school as part of their graduation then it would be no different than a Graduation Mass with all graduates in their Caps and Gowns. Or to give a special blessing to the work of the clowns then it could be appropriate to dress in their specific costume and make-up. If we had a Mass for the blessing of our men and women in the Armed Forces you would not object to them coming in Uniform and assisitng at the Altar so don’t object to Clowns whose professional uniform is a costume and make-up.

Being a Clown is a respectable profession whether they creep you out or not.

Like someone else said, I have no idea why there was a Clown Mass (so to speak). That alone is not an abuse, there may have been other things that happened during this Mass that were abuses though.

Not only that but as far as I know the pictures and you-tube stuff are all of the same Mass yet those who found extreme offense (and they may or may not be right in doing so) use this as if this kind of thing is happening every week or month!

Are you serious? These people dress up as clowns to go to Mass.

The same picture I see over and over is clearly during the homily and all the priest has on is a removable red nose. I would assume it was just there for the homily to make a point.
All the Priest had on is a clown nose.

You think that is appropriate, while acting in personae Christae, while celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass?

I can’t believe people disagree that dressing as clowns for Mass is inappropriate.

God Bless

I am assuming the most-talked about photo was the same mass setup and weekly readings as the posted YouTube video here (we do not have video from that exact mass). That picture clearly shows it is homily time and not during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. He had not gotten to the sacrifice part of the mass yet and I would expect the red nose would have come off at the end of the homily (unless other photo or video proof comes to light).

This strikes me as a beautiful and venerable tradition. Forgive me as an unbeliever, but I think it is so. Are you not all truly fools before your god, with the privilege to stand in the presence, yet infinitely fallible? Perhaps some are called to this, to mock, yet with genuine loyalty and love.

And the Clown tradition is tragicomic…does anyone find their pratfalls and humiliation genuinely funny? I should hope not – they emulate the failings and pains of all of us, and only occasionally the joys. Not for nothing have there been Holy Fools, since before the Abrahamic religions swept the West and a lot of the East. And when the Mask is added (Commedia and Guignol, Kathakali and Natyam, Kabuki, and so on, everywhere and forever) a human becomes more than they are. It is a talent we share, all of us.

You seem very committed to defending the clown. How about the Halloween Mass? Do you think it is OK to get communion handed to you from someone in a devil costume?

Again, a Priest wearing a clown nose during his Homily. How is that OK? A swarm of Clowns in the Sanctuary, how is that OK?

Is only the Liturgy of the Eucharist sacred?

Can I listen to an I Pod during the liturgy of the Word?

God Bless

It is a one-week thing (or even less), it is not the general practice of masses around the country or world. Visual tools are fine.

Ok, my opinion on the Halloween Mass comes down to poor judgment by one Eucharistic Minister. Next year they will probably wear something different. Did people walk out of that Halloween mass feeling any different? Probably not, they looked past the costume to the real reason they were there, the mass.

Priests can use visual props to help get their point across, it is their time to teach people, sometimes the only time during the week for most. Being creative does help get the messages across.

I can only assume it was on the same topics (tolerance, diversity) as the YouTube video, as video of that mass does not appear to be found online.

What most of the people at mass saw is what the topic was about, someone dressed or appears different than normal (as visual props to assist the priest). They did not see it detracting from the mass, or the youth dressed as clowns were irreverent in any way with their actions (with posted YouTube video). They did not detract from the Liturgy of the Word or homily in any way.

The iPod question appears to be unrelated to this discussion.

The only explanation I’ve ever heard for this type of Mass was that clowns are regarded as being a lowly type of people, they do things that the world considers foolish; Jesus too did things which people thought were strange and foolish. The whole explanation can be found here:

trinitywallstreet.org/welcome/?article&id=539

Personally, although I don’t disagree with the overall message, I think there are better ways than dressing up as clowns to convey it.

A) the Eucharistic minister is not in charge - it is the fault of the priest.

B) You’re speculating that you know how people felt and what they thought when they left the mass. You don’t know, you’re just going along with your own wishful thinking.

My own wishful thinking comes into play in this discussion also. I’m thinking that people actually know the sacred event they are participating in, but it seems many don’t.

I think the people who taped this out to be the ones who should be ashamed of themselves.
I can’t believe how evil the person who taped these masses are that they would go so low as to try to make good faithful catholics believe that there is something wrong with this. its obvious to me that the person who taped this has a personal problem with catholics and has a nefarious political agenda against the catholic church.

Oh you poor fools. It is a known fact that the soldiers and the crowds and our Lady and St. John were all dressed as clowns when our Lord was dying on the Cross! That’s why it’s legit to dress as clowns at Mass.
:doh2:🤷

I think it is the other way around. I think that those who would think it is okay to dress up as clowns during the Holy Sacrifice of the mass must really hate (misunderstand Catholics) Come on this is Our Lord who we are coming to see. We are not talking figuratively but TRULY physically there Body, blood, soul and divinity.

If Americans are ever wondering why it is our children don’t understand that Our Lord is truly present in the Holy Eucharist and that 80% of Catholic don’t believe. All we have to do is look at that video.

I think that the priest is a very weak man and needs all of our prays he is truly a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I pray that it is only because he has lost his way and is now blindly leading others over the cliff of deception.
