"In fact, one bishop at the meeting told CNA that Pope Francis has said he “made his displeasure clear” about the way the meeting was interpreted, and framed by some journalists.

“He told us that the matter had been dealt with; that Fr. Martin had been given a ‘talking to’ and that his superiors had also been spoken to and made the situation perfectly clear to him,” another bishop said.

“I do not think you will be seeing that picture of him with the pope on his next book cover,” the bishop told CNA. /end quote

OK, I am critical about some parts of what Fr. Martin has to say about some things, but this anonymously sourced story is, to me, ridiculous. Either get quotes you can use on the record, or don’t report this.

I think it’s safe to say that a bishop really did say this, but just didn’t want to go on the record as to face any blowback from certain elements in the Church. CNA is a reputable source. It is interesting that this topic would come up at such a meeting; if true it’s a blow for Fr. Martin who has always bragged about the support he gets from certain bishops and his superiors.

I have my doubts about this whole story. My guess is Pope Francis was upset about the way the meeting was portrayed as an outright endorsement of Fr. Martin’s controversial views, but I don’t believe for a second that Fr. Martin was given a “talking to”, whether Pope Francis actually said that or not.
