Hi,

I just wanted to check something about ‘Co-Redemptrix’…

I’ve been doing some research and I found out that it translates to “woman with the Redeemer”, and means that Mary participated in Christ’s work of redemption by being His Mother and sharing in His sufferings in a great way. However, it is still His work of redemption.

I wanted to check though, - it is believed that Christ is still the only Savior and Redeemer, correct? I read on the website about this proposed dogma that Mary’s participation and cooperation in Christ’s work only has merit because of what He did, that His work is what is necessary for salvation…

So - it IS true, that only Jesus saves us, right? though we can participate in His suffering and He can use our suffering to help souls?

I believe that Jesus is our only Saviour and that we can join our sufferings to His, as Mary did…

Here are some links with more information:
catholicsource.net/articles/coredemptrix.html
voxpopuli.org/response_to_7_common_objections_part1.php
ewtn.com/library/MARY/coredemedadv.htm
ewtn.com/library/papaldoc/jp2bvm48.htm

the second article describes Mary’s participation as “subordinate sharing” in Christ’s role as the only Mediator. I think that is pretty clear… her mediation is only in His… He is still the only Saviour… right? does this make sense? 🙂

thanks!

Yes, he is still the only Saviour. While Mary did participate in the Salvation by accepting the Will of the Lord, it is what Christ truly did that saves us. 🙂

Yes, you can even find Paul and Peter in their letters talking about how they share in Christ’s sufferings. Paul even tells the Corinthians that his suffering is for their salvation! Oh, Paul, how could you!!! That’s something a Catholic would say!! 2 Cor. 1:6.

Remember also how Mary’s participation is special as prophesied by Simeon (Lk 2:25-25) as a sword will pierce her heart in the context of Christ’s suffering. It helps to understand the unity of the Body of Christ. Christ suffers by extension through His members which plays through time. This is what Paul was making up that was “lacking” in Christ’s suffering. (Col. 1:24)

Absolutely! Jesus Christ is our only Savior.

Unfortunately the term co-redemptrix as used in modern English equates to joint-Redeemer, which is of course a heresy. It is a specious argument to promote this title rather than properly retranslating it. Further, several proponents of this title are actually promoting the false notion that this title is a doctrine of The Catholic Church.

Pope Benedict XV reaffirmed Mary as Co-Redemptrix in his Apostolic Letter Inter soldalica:
“Therefore, one can say, she [that is, the Blessed Virgin] redeemed with Christ the human race.” Pope Benedict XV, Apostolic Letter Inter soldalica, AAS 1918, 181.

Frank J Sheed, that doyen of the Catholic Evidence Guild, in his great Theology And Sanity, Sheed & Ward 1947, expresses the doctrine beautifully:
“As Christ represents humanity in the Redemptive Act, she represents humanity in the co-redemptive act. His suffering was the essential thing, and hers valuable only by derivation. His was the Passion, hers the Com-Passion. He was the Redeemer but the Church loves to call her Co-Redemptrix.” (Theology And Sanity, p 235).

Yes this is correct. Vatican II stopped short of using this title for Mary in Lumen Gentium because the translation is a confusion of the Latin which, as you rightly state, means that Mary is subservient to Jesus in the work of Redemption.

Just want to reconfirm.

So, the Catholic teaching is;
  1. Each of us could suffer, not only for our own salvation, but also for the sake of other’s salvation? or is this “suffering” only applied to the priests?
  2. If the above is true, each of us is the “co-redeemer”, but Mary’s one is unique, because her “anticipation” started way back before the event at the Calvary, but ours started after the event?

Everyone as St Paul teaches.
Jesus redeemed mankind, but each of us needs to cooperate to be saved. It is St. Paul, who wrote: “I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his Body which is the Church.” (Col. 1:24). What is lacking in Christ’s suffering is precisely what only we can do – take up our cross and suffer, repent and ask forgiveness, following the dictates of our conscience. [Frank Sheed, *Christ In Eclipse, p 105-7].

However, the Blessed Virgin is unique: “Therefore, one can say, she [that is, the Blessed Virgin] redeemed with Christ the human race.” Pope Benedict XV, Apostolic Letter Inter soldalica, AAS 1918, 18

As Fr William G Most affirms, Vatican II in Lumen Gentium, 62 (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church) taught that Mary is the Mediatrix of All Graces by the footnote which gave the teaching of Leo XIII, St Pius X, and Pius XII, all of whom so taught. The Council would (and could) not have so done if this was merely the expression of personal opinions by these Popes. The Council teaches that she was eternally united with Jesus in the decree for the Incarnation, and thus from eternity before time began and through all eternity (59). There are twelve Papal Texts speaking of Mary as the Mediatrix of All Graces. [See *Our Father’s Plan, 1988, Trinity Communications, p 92-93]

The Second Vatican Council declared: “Predestined from eternity by that decree of divine providence which determined the incarnation of the Word to be the Mother of God, the Blessed Virgin was on this earth the virgin Mother of the Redeemer, and **above all others and in a singular way **the generous associate and humble handmaid of the Lord. She conceived, brought forth and nourished Christ. She presented Him to the Father in the temple, and was united with Him by compassion as He died on the Cross. In this singular way she cooperated by her obedience, faith, hope and burning charity in the work of the Saviour in giving back supernatural life to souls. Wherefore she is our mother in the order of grace. (Lumen Gentium, 61).

Its like a scratched record ; if u want the whole thing again go to that thread. What is this about, is it if i say something long enough and often enough it will become true or is it a test of stamina ; if i keep posting long enough my learned opponants will get bored so I will get a free hand to post what I like without any opposing voice so the new folks on the forum can be indoctrinated.

WHY CAN’T PEOPLE JUST LEAVE THIS TO THE VATICAN; DON’T THEY TRUST THE POPE AND HIS COUNCIL ?

😃

this is why we should leave it to the pope and vatican.😦
😦 sorry T_T
I trust the pope and his council.
I am trying to understand what they teach. So far the google search is filled with Dr. Mark’s opinions. I’m getting very confused.
Maybe it’s time to ask someone who has access to my bishop (priests) or bishop himself 😛

🙂 don’t be sorry you are young and doing your best to learn; it wasn’t you I was having a go at but rather people that should know better.

Our church relies on wonderfull young people as yourself. 😃

Just say the ROSARY Eric and ask Mary the Mother of God to pray for you to be Guided by the Holy Spirit on this. Then follow that guidance no matter who tries to put you off track. 👍
