I have seen this suggestion going around that Mary is ‘co-redemptrix’ with Jesus for our sins. Is this one of those outrageous claims that people who don’t understand the Catholic church make against us or are we actually supposed to believe it?
As an inquiring and very interested protestant I hope that never will be the case!! Jesus is our only Redeemer!!! His Blood is sufficent to cover ALL our sins.

Jesus IS our only redeemer, and He redeemed Mary too, before her conception and birth. But in Mary’s fiat to God’s will she COoperated fully with the Divine Plan and in that way she is certainly COredeemer–by her COoperation, just as when we COoperate with God we are COheirs with Christ (St. Paul). In that sense, we are all COredeemers with, in, and through Christ and His grace of our brothers and sisters, in so far as we COoperate with Him. The more fully we are with Christ, the more we are COnjoined with Him in His mission. Mary, full of grace, most perfect creature and Mother of the redeemer, is, was, and remains as perfect a creature COredeemer with Christ as there can be. We should all strive to emulate Mary’s COoperation. As she was the sacred vessel by whom Jesus was made flesh and came to us, she likewise is the sacred vessel through whom we strive always to go to JESUS.

…Umm, did you read through the previous 20 posts before posting? I thought we had already addressed that…

I have to concur with those who oppose the title as dogma simply on the basis that it causes way too much confusion among those who don’t understand the precise theological implications of “co-redemptrix”. As a former Protestant, I was initally horrified by the title because, regardless of what “co” means in Latin, in modern English it implies equality with another; think “co-worker”, for example. IMO, the promulgation of Mary as “co-redemptrix” further alienates potentially interested non-Catholics from the Church and sows confusion among the faithful, many of whom cannot distinguish between *hyerdulia *and latria.

God bless,

Chris

I want to thank you for making this clear. When I first read the thread I was agast! You are right, to a Protestant inquiring in the Catholic faith it is a stumblimg bloc. Please don’t make it any harder on us. I am already convinced that the Roman Catholic Church is the church that Christ established… I am considering taking a RICA class soon.

It is a stumbling block even now for some, and I think it’s good. It hasn’t been declared dogma yet (the title, although a lot behind the theology of the title we already believe), but we already believe what’s behind the title. It’s good because it gets protestants enquiring about the Faith. 😉

It hasn’t been declared dogma yet /QUOTE

For sake of both non-Catholics who are disturbed by the title and Catholics who would mistakenly view Mary as a deity, I doubt it ever will be.

God bless,

Chris
