Dear Forum Members,

I need your assistance in handling a small dilemna. I am new to the Catholic faith, and have so much to learn myself but I have very strong beliefs and am firmly rooted in my faith in the Holy Trinity. I have a coworker who keeps sending me information on Evolution and who seems to enjoy attempting to “bait” me into a conversation on it. I refrain from engaging because I know I will end up getting angry with him, and I need to keep a good working relationship intact. Any advice?

You can accept the theory of evolution and still be a good Catholic, by the way. Even if you don’t accept the ToE, you could just tell him this and maybe it’ll make him leave you alone.

He is saying I am ignorant to think that we were created from a mythical creature called God. I accept that some beings form and evolve from other beings, but I do not accept his information.

Say – thanks soo much for the info!

Then have something silly handy to shift the focus - fashion item maybe???

Seriously though - relax - don’t get angry - if it is not something you are into simply say thanks for the info and if the person really seems to try to engage you in discussion say it is not one of your big areas of interest. Issues re faith need not come into it at all.

I agree, discussions on faith do not need to come into it. I truly feel in my heart that this is why he does what he does…to make an effort to get me to question what I believe. I have, for months now, just smiled at him and re-stated that we just need to agree to disagree. I don’t even open what he sends me anymore. I was just hoping for some eloquent comeback 😃

I would just tell him, “If evolution exists, then God created it.” Thus showing him that there is nothing he can do to persuade you that God does not exist.

No ‘eloquent comeback’ needed - treat it as just another thing you are not interested in. You may be wrong regarding his motives and until he states them clearly he may be just one of those PITA people we run into sometimes.

Ok, I will take your advice and see how that works. I really appreciate the reply.

I had a similar situation. I have an atheist aquaintance who is dead set on conviencing everyone around him that there is no God. He will bring up God and religion every chance he gets and those of us who do not see it his way are all ignorant and primitive for believing in this mythical “God”. After explaining my beliefs and the Catholic teaching on evolution ( I too believe that our forms have changed…God of course being the Creator and designer ) on several occasions I simply have decided that it is a waste of my time and breath. he didn’t care what I thought or what the Catholic teaching was -only that he wanted to convience me that I was wrong to believe in God at all.Your co-worker sounds similiar. The next time he hands you something hand it back and smiling tell him your not interested. You may want to read
👍catholic.com/library/Adam_Eve_and_Evolution.asp
The Catholic answer library has so much good information and being new to the faith may help you with some of those difficult challenges and questions.

…so my friend has a “buddy” out there somewhere doing the same thing to you…I’m sorry you have to deal with that too.

Maybe the reason I am taking this more to heart than maybe his political stance (which I also am a polar opposite of) is that although I was raised in a Christian family, the Catholic family and its teachings are very new yet still very dear to me and I find that I get very protective of what he is essentially attacking.

Perhaps what it boils down to is something my Mom always taught me when my sisters wouldn’t leave me alone. “Quit running and they will quit chasing you”. It takes two to tango, and if I refuse to dance, maybe he will find another passtime.

Tell him that his hero Darwin was a Anglican Christian when he wrote the book the Origin of the Species.
That George Mendel, the founders of Genetics was a Catholic Monk and Abbot no less.
That Father Georges Lemaitre the one that proposed the Big Bang theory was not only a Catholic Priest but he even made it to Bishop.
Darwin falled into Agnosticism because a personal problem, the death of his daugther, not because his work on evolution.
That Mendel and Lemaitre were Catholics all their lives and they were world class revolutionary scientists. That yes believed in the Christian God.

I have a question…

If we “evolved” from apes, why haven’t the apes in the zoo evolved? And for that matter why do we still have apes at all?

And one more…

Who “created” evolution?

I have a question…

Well…actually, there is a considerable body of evidence to indicate that anatomically modern human beings existed, side-by-side, with all of these extinct primates we supposedly “evolved” from, as far back as you care to investigate it. But you won’t hear that because it blows Unca Darwin’s pet theory all to smithereens.

I suggest the following book, but be careful with it, because the Darwinists tend to get all worked up about it when they see it on your shelves: amazon.com/Forbidden-Archeology-Unabridged-Michael-Cremo/dp/0892132949/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1203424321&sr=1-1

NBC aired a documentary based on this book in 1996, and for an example of how the Darwinists reacted to it, observe the following comment sent to NBC:
“…I have never seen such unadulterated hogwash in my entire life…If you present outrageous theories, then you must present someone with an opposing view to create a balanced presentation. If you cannot present this type of an investigation, then you should be forced to have a flashing graphic saying ‘Entertainment Value Only’, just like the Psychic Friends network has to do. I will be writing to my congressional delegation, the FCC, and the President to argue that legislation should exist to force you to do this…” (TH, New Mexico State University)
Writing to the President because a network airs a show you disagree with??? Can you say “overkill”?

But this just shows you how they react when their sacred cow is shown to be the pack of balderdash that it actually is. Their blood pressure goes sky-high. (shrug)

Two suggestions:
  1. Tell the co-worker that evolution is completely compatable with your Catholic faith.
  2. Use this response like a broken record:
Him: Blah, blah, blah.

You: Thank you. Evolution is completely compatable with my Catholic Faith.

Him: Yes, but blah, blah, blah.

You: Thanks again. Evolution is completely compatable with my Catholic Faith.

Him: But blah blah blah.

You: Evolution is completely compatable with my Catholic faith.

He’ll get the message. 😃

Is this happening at work? If so, tell him to knock it off or you’ll file a harrassment complaint against him.

– Mark L. Chance.

I second the post above mine.

If he is harassing you, threaten to nail him with harassment and he will probably keep his idiotic opinion to himself.

Or…next time he asks you why you believe in God, just say…

“Because I can see Him. He’s right there behind you.” [point]

When he turns (most people will do so almost reflexively, regardless of belief), then say, “Made you look.” And walk away.

I did that (different topic) to someone who was bugging me with their particular dogma.
