Or…next time he asks you why you believe in God, just say…

“Because I can see Him. He’s right there behind you.” [point]

When he turns (most people will do so almost reflexively, regardless of belief), then say, “Made you look.” And walk away.

I did that (different topic) to someone who was bugging me with their particular dogma.

I LOVE IT!

People who have a religious faith are a thorn in the side of most proclaimed atheists because they feel like you feel about your beliefs. Disagreement calls their belief in “no God” into question which makes them uncomfortable. In addition belief in God usually implies a moral code and obligations, some parts of which they do not want to accept because it would pinch their particular lifestyle. Which parts may vary widely from individual to individual, but in my opinion often revolve around limitations on sexual behavior. Not many would admit this and you will hear many more lofty reasons for their difficulty with God.

This plays out in similar fashion for many Catholics who leave the Faith because the Church does not accept divorce and remarriage or the practice of contraception, etc. They become some other brand of Christian where their particular problem is no longer a problem. Often you will hear many lofty reasons why they left, but it is the dislike of certain restrictions which is at the base of their need to leave.

He is saying I am ignorant to think that we were created from a mythical creature called God. I accept that some beings form and evolve from other beings, but I do not accept his information.
Is this happening at work? If so, tell him to knock it off or you’ll file a harrassment complaint against him.

– Mark L. Chance.
I second Mr. Chance’s suggestion. There is a time and a place for such conversations. If he is calling you names (“ignorant”), then he has crossed a line. If he is sending you unsolicited information, then he has crossed a line.

A polite but firm warning to stop interfering with your work would be appropriate.

Thank you everyone for all of your feedback, literature and suggestions. I think I now have a pretty good foundation with which to deal with him. 😉

I’d say this is unfair. Many atheists are very moral (although there’s no reason to be–read Twilight of the Idols), they just don’t “see the need for that hypothesis,” as one of Napoleon’s astronomers once said about God.

Yes, that’s asinine–care to explain existence?–but the problem is intellectual, not moral.

That’s true. There is also the fact that a great many of them say, “I can be moral without God,” and then they have to back that up with action; nobody is going to believe that you are being “moral without God” if you are shacking up, shoplifting, drinking, smoking, or pirating software, music and movies. 😉

I have a question…

If we “evolved” from apes, why haven’t the apes in the zoo evolved? And for that matter why do we still have apes at all?
My ancestors came from Europe
So why do we still have Europeans?

Asking why we still have apes would underline a poor grasp of evolution. dianaballein’s “friend” would react like a bull to a red flag.
And one more…

Who “created” evolution?
That is not germane to the study of it.

If the point is to stop the rude behavior that doesn’t seem to be the way to go.
