The United States Catholic Bishops have recently published a statement entitled, Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord . It is a resourse guide for the development of Lay Ecclesial Ministry and was approved by the full body of Bishops in November 2005. It is definitely a “must read!”

Is it a must read in a “wow, that’s great!” way or in a “you won’t believe what they’ve said NOW” way? Not advocating for the laity to help consecrate something, are they?

I suggest you read the statement for yourself … and then we can talk about it. Here is a link to Remarks by Bishop Dale J. Melczek, Chairman of the Committee on the Laity.

I downloaded that PDF. 70 pages? Uh…methinks a must not read. I’m beginning to understand why the USCCB is taking so long to approve our new English Mass translation. Committees, working documents, drafts, proposals…blah. Do they actually do any real work there, besides employ numerous typists?

Somebody else can give a brief synopsis and I might read it.

And if we are blessed to be in a parish run by a Lay Ecclesial Minister, does that make us LEM-mings?

I’m not going over that cliff. :nope:

 Sounds to me like a Lay Ecclesial Minister is someone who takes their Baptism very seriously … and they probably had to read far more than 70 pages in their formation. But I suppose you can wait for a synopsis if you choose …

Now if you were to suggest that I read 70 pages or more of something written by Pope Benedict XVI or John Paul II the Great, I would read with pleasure. But even a few pages written by the USCCB? No thanks, I’ll pass.

Or you could provide said synopsis, madam, since you have already read it.

70 pages? Come on. I’ll read a link of a page or two, but 70?

Sounds to me like it might be a means for those aching to vest/be in the sanctuary during Mass to realize their sordid desires…

I see your customary reaction to a lovely lady who has tried to share something she felt was beautiful and worth our while. Since when is any ministry within the Lord’s holy sanctuary “sordid?” Don’t even bother to reply.

As for the others who are ready to puncture her enthusiasm with negativity, why not go play in traffic? 😛

Mary Agnes,

🙂 I noticed the pages are very short, less than a full half-page, and had it not been so late in the evening, I may have finished reading it. Thank you for the link. It is full of excellent references!

Sorry, sorry, sorry…but you have to admit, they haven’t exactly been all that inspiring the last few years.

I’m not being negative. I just don’t want to wade through 70 pages of bureaucratese. If it’s such a beautiful and inspiring document, surely someone can provide a synopsis.

I’m sure I’ll be called uncharitable too before this thread is locked. :nope:

Mama always said, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” Why was it necessary to submit a post just to say one does not want to read it? :ehh:

Duh!

Why was it necessary to submit a post questioning why I submitted a post? Was that nice?

Why can’t someone just summarize this fabulous document in one paragraph or less? My time is precious.

Now…would you like me to tell you what 10% of 1.2 billion is?? Duh, indeed! 🤓

Since this thread contains no “talking points” and simply offfers a document as a point of reference and the other postings added nothing more than “sidebars”, the document is now noted and the thread is now closed.
