Dialogue isn’t about making people “feel good”. Perhaps you ought to go to the doctor.
You are right. It’s not about feeling good. What it is about is finding common ground while retaining specific beliefs that are non-negotiable. What it is not about is making statements that automatically puts everyone on the defensive so as to make dialogue impossible.

The peace process begins with openness and mutual benefit, but is conversely ended when one side demands compliance without an amenable resolution.

Peace…

At a meeting this morning, a coworker mentioned that she had to call the church of "Old Lady of ________ " for a priest. Several snickers went around the room. She then stated, "Well my husband corrected me, it’s Our Lady of _______. They snickered again.

Now, many of these people brag about what Christians they are, etc. I chided them, mentioning that I didn’t think Jesus appreciated our disrespecting His mother like that, and they tried to stifle themselves, but, I was rather shocked.

Those of you who are not Catholic, what makes you think it is okay to mock and disrespect the mother of Jesus? Are you really “saved”, and do you have the Holy Spirit within you when you say things like this? I doubt your theology too, but I respect your sincerity and your traditions. It wouldn’t even cross my mind to criticize, much less mock, because I would be mocking the Holy Spirit.

Please explain to me how you think you can get away with being so derisive.
Hi Ceil…I am sorry you had to go thru that at work. But can I respectfully say that you cant lump everyone that is not catholic in the same category. I am not catholic, but go to a Bible Baptist Church, and I would not dream of putting down and making fun of another’s faith that might be different than my own.
It does sadden me that someone who names the name of Christ would dishonor Him by behaving like that to you. That certainly does not bring honor to Christ to make jestful remarks about Mary. the woman chosen to bare the Son of God. It was NOT ok for that person to be so ignorant.

You know it never ceases to surprise me how much religion is talked about at the workplace (particularly what Ive heard on this forum). You know regarding the OP, I reckon a decent percentage, if not most of the people in that situation from another country such as mine, would not even understand the “humour” that was being said in the room. Its only in America where there is this Christian cold war existing between denominations.

Im going to be open here and say that for those bible Christians or “non-denominational” Christians (like the ones living in the bible belt) who are joking/making fun about/of the Catholic Church, I’ll have you know that people from other countries perceive you as being racist, backward, ignorant and fundamentalist in your thinking. Sorry to say this (sort of), but you are so caught up in yourselves that you are ignorant of the fact that the Catholic Church is truly global and founded on the Truth of God, and underneath this the intelligence of the Church Fathers and doctors guided by the Holy Spirit.
MH 84 What you need to be sorry of is lumping every Bible Believer into the same category…sheesh…didnt I JUST say this to someone else?? I am a Baptist…and I can tell you that not ALL of us put down and make fun of the catholic faith…me included. my best friend of 30 years is about as devout a catholic as you will hope to meet. I am ashamed of people who call themselves Christians and demean and make fun and put down those who believe differently than they. But please…lets be fair…NOT ALL OF US BIBLE BELIEVERS ARE LIKE THAT!

Hi Semper Fi…re reading what I posted…you are right…I didnt mean it like it came out…😊 I meant that not all of us , as MORE to say not all Baptists, etc are like that, and I didnt mean that catholics dont believe the Bible…so my apologies!🙂

I don’t think your co-worker was making fun of Mary. I think your co-worker was making fun of the Catholic habit of naming Churches by using one of Mary’s titles.

One of the most charming take-offs is a fictitious Church called

“Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility”. It is from the radio show “Prairie Home Companion”.

I think if one looks for insult, one is sure to find it. 🤷

I was surprised when passing by a church called “Saint Mary Baptist church”. (can’t remember exact name, but it is quite closed enough). Other Christian churches use Saint’s names for their churches too.

People are afraid and ignorant of what they do not know. I don’t think it’s okay to mock the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of God.
This reminds me of what The Voice said at the end of one episode of The Outer Limits, Alien Radio: “If you mock what you don’t understand, you may find out too late that the penalty for such arrogance is… alienation!”
The statement might be a bit strong, but appears true to some extent…

Some of them might’ve thought “oh no, I am not mocking Mary, but I am mocking Virgin Mary of Catholic”.
Bingo. They’re mocking the alleged sightings of Mary and how Catholics name a lot of things, such as: Our Lady of the Lake, Our Lady of Hope, Our Lady of [your country here], Our Lady of the Snows, etc. USA Today had an article about a Catholic Church and a long-term vigil it was having (to protest the closing of the church). Several responses mocked the name of the church, Our Lady of Mount Caramel:

-"“Our Lady of Mount Carmel” - ok what is that about? I am serious. Who is this “lady”, and where is she in scripture?"

-“Our Lady of Sedentary Lifestyles is having a vigil at my house this evening. We’re going to have fried chicken, potatoes, and watch Monday Night Football. All parishoners are invited to attend and partake in the celebration of gluttony.”
