Co-workers mock Our Lady

At a meeting this morning, a coworker mentioned that she had to call the church of "Old Lady of ________ " for a priest. Several snickers went around the room. She then stated, "Well my husband corrected me, it’s Our Lady of _______. They snickered again.

Now, many of these people brag about what Christians they are, etc. I chided them, mentioning that I didn’t think Jesus appreciated our disrespecting His mother like that, and they tried to stifle themselves, but, I was rather shocked.

Those of you who are not Catholic, what makes you think it is okay to mock and disrespect the mother of Jesus? Are you really “saved”, and do you have the Holy Spirit within you when you say things like this? I doubt your theology too, but I respect your sincerity and your traditions. It wouldn’t even cross my mind to criticize, much less mock, because I would be mocking the Holy Spirit.

Please explain to me how you think you can get away with being so derisive.

I believe I heard this kind of response before.

As time goes on, I hear this derision of the Blessed Virgin more and more from Protestant Evangelicals and Fundamentalists - even on these forums. I’m becoming more and more convinced that Protestants have the spirit of anti-Christ. May Jesus have mercy on them.

It is never right to mock what another person believes. As a Protestant I do not agree with everything that is taught about Mary; nevertheless, she deserves respect and honour for who she was and the place God has given her in history. To belittle Mary - or any of the great men or women of God - is to disrepect God Himself.

Goodness… I’m fortunate I haven’t heard/read any such evangelicals. The ones with which I’m most familiar don’t disrespect Our Blessed Mother in this way. They downplay her role and challenge our doctrines, but they don’t do anything near what’s mentioned in the O.P. More often than not, the nastiness I hear comes from nominal Catholics

Bingo - simple logic. Jesus was a righteous Jew, which means He was obedient to the 10 Commandments, which includes the command to “honor thy father and thy mother.” Why some people think they’re exempt from at least being respectful toward the mother of our Lord is beyond me.

Oh, I suspect that could be some of it. However, as I said, I usually hear this attitude of disrespect coming from nominal Catholics who are angry with the Church for some reason or another - and they should know better. Protestants often question why we have such-and-such doctrine, or why so many of our churches are named after Our Lady, but they’re not the ones from whom I hear the most disrespect.

or, they might have been thinking “I am not mocking Mary the Mother of Jesus, I am poking gentle fun at a Catholic co-worker, so doesn’t she just lighten up–didn’t she get the memo that it is okay for us to mock her as long as we don’t dis any non-Christian religions?” People with this mentality will also make fun of the mother of the person whom they are dating, engaged to, or working for, stupid, but then, stupid is as stupid does.

Wow, strong statement Paul. What else would you say is that spirit? Condemnation of the Pope and bishops? Very strong statement.

Dialogue will never get far with this kind of statement. And people are more turned off every day by these sentiments. Better to entice with honey than crush with condemnation.

People are afraid and ignorant of what they do not know. I don’t think it’s okay to mock the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of God.

But by the same token it’s unfair to accuse those who do as not being saved and having the Holy Spirit living in them. People can be very ignorant and sinful. That doesn’t mean the Holy Spirit leaves them. He is a deposit and will not leave because us humans are sinful.

It’s unwise to group all protestants of being this way. I haven’t protested too much and dislike the moniker.

Pull out the beam that is your own eye so that you can see well to take out the splinter in your brother’s eye.

It is much easier to point at the sin of others because it turns the mirror away from ourselves. I am sinful, so are you, so are they. I wouldn’t want to be you on judgement day either or myself or them. We all have to answer for our mistakes. It’s best we deal with our own behavior and sinful hearts instead of worrying about the sin of others which we can’t do anything about.

** I don’t think its the protestant themselves, its the teachings they are taught from their leaders. One thing I have experienced is protestants frown on the devotion Catholics have for the blessed Virgn Mary, they have a misunderstanding of a Catholics love for her and worship for God. I dont think they have been taught the difference from their 20th century leaders, between devotion and love of chrisitans and true worship given to God. although their original protestant leaders from the 15th century believed the same way Catholics do towards the blesseed Virgin Mary. I think If protestants would take the time to understand the teachings of Mary from the Catholic church and her ancient traditions from the apostles. Protestants will learn they have nothing to fear but gain in Christian Love.**

Was this a one-time occurence, or does this sort of thing happen repeatedly? If this was the only time and it doesn’t happen again, I’d just let it go. But if it happens repeatedly, a complaint to your human resources department may be in order.

Excuse me Mystic Warrior… I don’t think that portraying a snobby superiority attitude is going to win you friends and influence people. You don’t know me from Adam… it would probably be wise to have more than 35 posts under your belt if you are going to give scathing answers to people you don’t know. I never said I was without sin… just that I wouldn’t want to be judged on the sin of disrespecting our heavenly mother.
