Can someone please explain why the Code of Canon Law was put in place? I understand what it is but I’m trying to explain it’s reasons for it. Thanks

I can hardly think a better person to explain it than Dr. Edward Peters, JCD:

http://www.canonlaw.info/a_simpleoverview.htm
" In much the same way that we as citizens live under civil law, so we as Catholics live under canon law. Like secular law, ecclesiastical law imposes various obligations on us as Catholics, though often the fact that a given ecclesiastical obligation is actually canonical one is not realized. At the same time, canon law, like civil law, affords us certain rights and protections, albeit benefits that might not always be recognized or asserted."

The Church always had laws but with communication being what it was it could take a long time for different dioceses to get. And they were issued sporadically and published in forms that were only available to a few. Many laws were changed or abrogated over time but few people got the message about the changes.

The 1917 Code was put into place to regroup all the laws in effect at the time in one easily accessible place. It was updated in 1983.

I know Wiki is not always a reliable place for information but there is a good explanation to be found for codifying the laws.
