COGIC pastor's funeral at Catholic chuch

Just saw my local paper’s obituary column…saw a Church of God in Christ pastor listed, showing how he founded a local church in my city and had a deep faith in the Lord. All well and good…until we get to the part about where his funeral’s going to be.

Yup…a Church of God in Christ pastor’s funeral will be held (according to the COGIC service customs) on Monday in a CATHOLIC church, presided by said pastor’s son. And that Catholic church is the parish to which I used to belong.

I’m pretty sure that’s not allowed…but what do you suggest I do?

A bishop may allow the Use of a Catholic Church for other denominations, as long as they respect the building, and acknowledged the fact the we believe that the Lord is present in the tabernacle

And indeed it works the other way around too, I know of a couple of Catholic parishes without buildings of their own that “borrow” Protestant churches as well, for Sunday Mass.

Nothing. You don’t know the family or the circumstances surrounding this man’s death.

Catholic Church’s tend to be the largest churches in any given area. As such, as a sign of of respect to others, a Catholic Church may be used for a non-Catholic funeral, especially when a non-Catholic Christian group lacks a suitable space. A lot of small congregations will meet in public spaces, such as school auditoriums, so this would particularly apply to them.

Its the Church’s goal that all should end up in heaven, so what better place for the prayers for the repose of a non-(earthly)-Catholic’s soul.

As others have suggested, the Catholic Church is probably the the largest Church in the area and a large crowd may be expected. And the bishop can give permission to allow a Church to be used for such a purpose.

The fact that the family of a Church of God in Christ minister would *want *to use a Catholic church suggests that the minister was likely a friend of the Catholic pastor. I’d kind of think it would be interesting to see the reactions of any visiting non-Catholic clergy…

A nearby Catholic church, which is known for a rather loose interpretation of the rules, one year allowed the Jewish community to use the church for their High Holy Days, which was licit. However, one elderly lady wandered in unaware of what was going on. As she left she was heard to mutter, “That was weird even for this church.”
