cohabitation question

Do you have any scriptural quotes and favorite points to offer in the argument that cohabitation before marriage, and fornication, are grave sins. For me to use when debating the subject with two Christians who are non-Catholics.
 
John 16 (New American Standard Bible)

The Holy Spirit Promised

7"But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the (L**)**Helper [Advocate or Holy Spirit] will not come to you; but if I go, (M)I will send Him to you.

This one is crystal clear.

Revelations 21:8

8 But as for cowards, the unfaithful, the depraved, murderers, the unchaste, sorcerers, idol-worshipers, and deceivers of every sort, their lot is in the burning pool of fire and sulfur, which is the second death."
 
thanks. I have said that these things are sins. And been receieved with increduilty. It’s as though they think I’ve invented a whole new religion, when it seems to me that chastity is Christianity 101. Is there a major Christian denomination that does not view fornication and cohabitation a sin?
 
Episcopals, the UU, the United Church of Christ, some Methodists, some Lutherans…

They do not view fornication as a sin??? Perhaps individuals within those denominations, but as a doctrine? I would think not, especially with the biblical prohibitions.
 
Good point; one cannot have it both ways. Not that I’m a doubting Thomas, but I’d be surprised to see Lutherans and Methodists in that group, at an “official” level.

With the Episopals, one need only look at the Robinson case. He was elevated to Bishop before he attempted his simulated marriage to his partner but long after he was living publically in sin with said partner. So, extra-marital fornication must not be considered a sin.

Not necessarily. That logic would dictate that no sinner could be elevated to the position of Bishop. I’ll bet rather that fornication is still considered a sin, but one that isn’t so serious to be overlooked. :eek: 🤷

I guess there’s the “official” Episcopal interpretation, and the interpretation in practice. I’d like to see some of their writings either way to be more certain…all of this is speculation until we’ve seen something “official”.

But for most religions, someone living a life of public sin would not be eligible for the office of Bishop or other leadership positions. Most protestant denominations don’t differentiate between mortal and venial sins.
 
That’s true…but doesn’t address your presumption that “extra-marital fornication must not be considered a sin”.

Just wait until you discuss the Church’s teaching against contraception with them…or maybe even some of your Catholic friends.

Something that trips up most people is that in the TaNaKh, sexual intercourse was what defined marriage. As such “cohabitation before marriage” is a contradiction in terms.

My suggestion would be discussing:

What is acceptable:​

  • Sex within marriage;

What is unlawful:​

  • Places;
  • Times;
  • Types;

What is a sin:​

  • Sex outside of marriage;
  • Sex without commitment;
