I don’t know if coke-cola got anything right or not.
However, I am not surprised that African Americans and the Hispanic say that things have improved. After all Martin Luther King brought tons of wrong, unjust issues to the forefront that resulted in changes that were long overdue. People of color were not treated well at all in this country, and did not have the same or equal opportunities as “whites.”
But if one looks at the overall development and changes within this country since 1981 things have gone steadily downhill for most people. Housing crashes, the loss of the small farmer, stagnant wages, outsourcing resulting in lost jobs, crime rates and continued inequity in pay and promotions among women and people of color. The fight is constant for the common man and woman to keep their heads above water, while a few control most of the wealth in this country.
If we want to say we are better off there needs to be greater equity among all people in terms of wages and opportunity, retention of jobs in this country, improved educational standards and practices, better health care, the return of small farmers in favor of corporate farms, and less dependence on fossil fuels. (Just to name a few issues.)
Things have improved in some areas, but not substantially enough to make an overall difference in the actual standing of this country.
