Tomorrow I am going to be part of the catechumenate mass at church. I am very nervous about speaking in public anyway, but suddenly also, after literally years of being sure that this is what I want, I am feeling really, really uncertain about whether I am doing the right thing. I feel totally disconcerted and upset and don’t know whether to go through with things.

Last night’s RCIA was very weird, with the catechist saying all sorts of stuff about the Catholic church having misunderstood the Reproduction aspects of natural law and thus being wrong about homosexuality and contraception and so I ended up horribly confused by the end. I left thinking, well, there are going to be people with all sorts of different views, I need to focus on the reality of the eucharist, but since sleeping on it, I don’t know what to do. Any advice welcome.

Satan attacks before big moments in the Christian Journey. Sure, the catechist was probably in the wrong but Satan is using this confusion to keep you from Holy Mother Church.

Pray. Trust. Jesus is Love and the fullness of His Loving Presence is in the Catholic Church.

You mentioned the reality of the Eucharist. If it is truly a reality to you, which I pray that it is, then you will be ok with suffering a bit. Unite your sufferings to the Most Blessed Sacrament when you get the chance. Be with Him and LET HIM BE WITH YOU. 😃

The priest of your parish is there to help. Ask for help. Catholicism is a group effort, not a solo journey through the desert.

ALSO I highly recommend you talk to the priest at some point about the catechist.

Your catechist is absolutely wrong and should not be in that role, since he/she is teaching you heretical views. Don’t listen to this person.

We are children of a loving God. Anything, and i mean anything, causing you to be upset or anxious cannot be from Him. I pray that all obstacles, including those unintended from within the church, become stepping stones to a most glorious moment. :highprayer:

Peace!!!

Be at peace, dear one. :hug3:

Tomorrow’s mass is just being introduced to the parish, yes? You are not being baptized or making a profession of faith, correct?

You have plenty of time…

And yes, Catholics are a seriously diverse bunch, and some of us harbor and even teach others ideas that are contradictory to the faith.

It will be fine. Take a deep breath, make an act of faith, and carry on.

Yes, this is very normal. 🙂 :hug1: This won’t be the first time you doubt your faith. God gives us plenty of opportunities to reaffirm our faith in Him and in His Church under many difficult and trying circumstances. I’m in one of those difficult times of faith currently so I know from experience. 😉

Yes that Catechist is very off in some of his beliefs. I would report it to your parish priest. In the meantime reassure yourself with the TRUE teachings of the Catholic Faith as found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Do you have your own copy of that?

Congratulations!! Welcome home!!

The unquestionable reality of the Eucharist has brought MANY seekers to the Church…I agree with previous posters - see the pastor…your catechist was wrong to present secular views that are contrary to Church teaching…I’ve been a member of our parish RCIA team for more than 20 years, and I never heard such nonsense before…

I just want to say that you could just ask your parish priest or pastor about what the catechism said and let him deal with it from there, rather than “reporting” her. Just say something like, “Father X, I’m confused about what the Church teaches about these issues. I thought the Church teaches this, but Mrs Catechist said (specify what she said).”

Whenever you feel worried or afraid, pray. This works for fears about entering the Churrch as well as everything else. St Ignatius says that when we are experiencing desolations, we should maintain our course, only changing our minds when we are not experiencing upsetting feelings or thoughts.

👍

Be at peace.
Pray St. Teresa of Avila’s prayer:

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices.

– St. Teresa of Avila

The catechist is wrong about those points, and this (quoted above) may be the gentlest way to bring it to the attention of the pastor. I think he needs to know, so he can make it better. Don’t try to correct the catechist yourself. Trust him to handle it, so that your attention is focused on your own faith journey. It sounds like you are doing fine. Keep it up!

May the Holy Spirit assist and guide you always toward greater faith, hope, and love.

I still remember at a distance now of well over 60 years, walking home from Church after the confirmation practice, night before the event. I was 14; Anglican and a very, very solemn and serious occasion for which we wore white dresses and veils…

Grey sky and I stopped at the field by the Quaker cemetery to talk to a horse. Sure and certain with that dreadful base of the belly fear and feeling that I was not ready,w as not … fit… A horrible horrible feeling OP believe me,

The horse reached over and bit my shoulder, no idea why,

Of course I had made the commitment, as you have, relatives were coming, no way could I back out,…

And it was fine, great,a solemn and meaningful occasion as we knelt 2 by 2 before the BIshop.

Stage fright is very real, As a former classical dancer I assure you of that, and is is healthy as it shows humility and sensitivity,

Head high, deep breath…

And that catechist needs reporting and dealing with. REALLY!

Thank you all. I was greatly encouraged by my sponsor and others to go through with things and although I was incredibly nervous I did it, and was so relieved afterwards. I shall speak to my sponsor after Christmas about what was said by the catechist and go from there.

:hug3: So glad that all went well for you. I’ll keep you in my prayers as you move forward.

Small question - can I call myself Catholic now?
If by Catholic you mean a member of the Catholic Church… then no.

But, if you mean Catholic as in a Catechumen for the Catholic Church,… then yes.

I would stick with, I going to be Catholic soon.
