I was surprised to hear the Collect of the Day this morning (for the feast of the Chair of St. Peter.) It said in part,
All-powerful Father, You have built Your Church on the rock of Saint Peter’s confession of faith.
I thought the concept of the “rock” being Peter’s faith was a protestant one that is used against the idea of the papacy. I’m confused now.

No need to be. The ‘rock’ of St. Peter’s faith is indeed a ‘part’ of the Catholic Christian understanding of how Christ built His church on Peter.

So many things in the Bible are multifaceted and layered. They are not ‘just’ one thing, but can relate to many. This is a case in point. It does not at all negate the fact that the Church was built on Peter (AND his faith); it enhances it.

God bless.

Thanks. You’re right of course. As a revert, I tend to be overly sensitive to anything that smacks of watering down the faith, etc.
