I’m glad I started this thread. There are lots of great ideas here! I had a couple things ready to send, but it seemed like there should be more. Thanks everyone!
I still remember the first care package I received in college…quite a while ago now…it was a shoebox full of carefully-wrapped blonde brownies from my dear Gram (rest her soul, she’s been gone since February). All the girls in my dorm and I devoured them! Mmmmm…can still taste them now…blonde brownies were one of her specialties. 😃

So here’s another vote for home-baked goodies! 👍
🍰 Homemade goodies: I sent enough for him to share. Cookies and brownies help new college students make friends. 😃

My younger children thought they were going to get yummy baked goods, but they only got a little bit. I’ll have to make another batch to avoid sibling rivalry. After seeing all the treats their big brother gets, all my children will want to go to college. 😉

Please share your best ideas of what to send to a new college student in a care package from home.

Thanks in advance.🙂
Home-cooked food! That’s what I would recommend. Every time I went home, I couldn’t get enough of home-cooked meals, and was always sad that when I left I would have to subsist on barely edible food for another extended period of time, until my next visit home. Your kids will thank you for it!

And oh, just a side note. If you do this on a regular basis, the people in your son/daughter’s dorm will become jealous and comment on how good his/her parents are and that they really care about them!

I always loved it when my mom sent me my favorite Gardelli chocolate in the mail! Another great thing she sent was hot chocolate mix & Airborne (vitamin C supplements, to help with the millions of colds I got freshman year!)

Everyone’s recommending baked goods–I definitely second that! Just make sure that your son/daughter knows that they are on the way; once a whole batch of brownies got stuck in the mail room for a month! 🤷

Anything chocolate was always welcome in my care packages…just be careful if there’s warm weather!

Along the lines of sending photos from home, I’d suggest having younger siblings send mail. My mom used to always force my 3 brothers at home to send a note or a card, and even if it was a sentence scrawled quickly by my too-cool 12-year-old brother, I appreciated it.

Mom would also clip newspaper and magazine articles she thought I’d like, or sometimes political satire she knew I’d appreciate. Sometimes she’d send along whole issues of magazines she knew I liked to page through when I was home, like *The Weekly Standard *or *Crisis *(when it was still in print).

Mom also sent me the Entertainment Book for the area my university is in–big money saver there!
