I have a stupid question, just wanted somebody else’s opinion as to what I should do.

The bottom line is, I grew up in a home where my mother was abusive, and I have a fear of annoying/burdening people who are being nice to me, in case I’ll get on their nerves. I’m a college freshman and am taking a bunch of classes this semester, one being cell biology. I love the class, but the professor is difficult to follow sometimes, because he’ll talk too much about a topic but not give the main points clearly.

Now, there’s a graduate student TA in the class and he has been an enormous help- very easy to understand, with a talent for explaining complicated concepts and making them seem simple and understandable. He usually sits in the front and I do normally in all my classes as well (hard to be distracted by kids on Facebook in the front!), and during lecture he asks me and the other students next to him if we understand what the professor is talking about. If not, he explains it, mentions key parts to learn, etc.

He will help people after class and has office hours one day a week. He’s also partly responsible for the coursework. The professor also does the same. Unfortunately, I either am in class or am working during the office hours, and usually have to leave cell bio right away. I am often more confused after listening to the prof’s explanation so I’d rather not go to him (even though he’s very pleasant and tries to be helpful).

Is it appropriate to ask the TA if you could make an appointment with him to go over concepts? He obviously enjoys teaching but I hate the thought of burdening somebody with me when they are busy. I know I should probably just ask, but I wasn’t sure if that was considered reasonable, and I don’t want to look like an idiot and ask somebody at school. :o

I know this has nothing to do with Catholicism…but you’re all reasonable people! 👍 Thanks for any help.

Yes, definitely ask him. TAs are not usually paid by the hour, but receive tuition assistance and a stipend per semester, so you don’t need to feel badly. It sounds like he really enjoys helping students, and would be glad to help you if he has the time. If he does end up helping you outside of his normal hours, a nice thing to do would be to let the professor know how helpful he was. Hearing students’ positive comments is not only nice to hear but something professors keep in mind when they serve as references for their TAs in the future.

I agree. Absolutely ask the TA. Simply explain that your schedule doesn’t allow you to get to the regular office hours. And it would be very nice if you let the professor know how helpful the TA has been.

You are paying a lot of money to be educated. Get educated! If the prof can’t help go to whoever can. It sound like the TA might realize some concepts aren’t being explained clearly which is why they are asking if you understand.

Ofcourse you should! TA’s are paid and hold office hours where they get paid as well (well in Canada they do)! I am sure most TA’s love explaining things to others. I ask my TA’s so many questions, I even ask my profs questions :D. Plus if you ask your TA for help, he/she will know you and you can develop a good relationship with him/her.

If you want, there many upper year students who volunteer/tutor for free. There are many people at university who are willing to help!

Wishing you all the best!

Definitely. And if you know any students who took the class before, ask for their notes or some tips. A study group helps because you’re teaching each other the material.

Good luck with cell bio! For a 200 level course, it’s rather hard.

Absolutely. I understand where you are coming from, as I am a sophomore in college, and have struggled with the same worries as well. But the biggest mistake you can make is to not ask for help. If he is also partially responsible for the course material like you say, then he is also responsible for assisting the students when they need help.

Most teachers will be happy to make room outside of their schedule to meet with their students. Go for it. 🙂

Thanks everyone for the replies! 🙂

I emailed the TA and he said he’d be happy to help, and it sounds like he will even set up appointments regularly if needed. My fears, as usual (most of the time) were groundless.

I will definitely let the professor know how helpful he’s being. There’s also teaching awards…maybe a nomination? I always want to reward those who go above and beyond- that is sometimes rare these days.

Cell bio is a tough class but I enjoy it very much. It’s fascinating to learn about how and why living things work!
