I am in a college fraternity and was surprised to find out they wear hoods and take secret oaths and learn secret mottos and handshakes. Everybody also says some kind of creed at meetings that is secret. Are college fraternities at all like freemasons? Are they immoral?

it depends what they actually do in these fraternitys…if they are doing anything blasphemous, or immoral or illegal then it wouldnt be wise to join one

i would say to stay away from it…unless it’s a christian thing(which you can pretty much guarantee it’s not) then you gotta ask yourself, what could they possibly be devoting themselves to? things like that are very often satanic, even if they don’t directly intend for it to be…
of course whether this is an evil fraternity or not, i think it’s just best to play it safe, and remind yourself that you have nothing to gain by joining them, and you already have your own Catholic religion to devote yourself to, and whatever time wasted at that useless fraternity could have been spent with God, who desires to be with you, whereas these people couldn’t care less.

Before joining a fraternity it would be wise to look at the history of it. This info is all online these days. Many fraternities are rooted in Freemasonry. A Catholic should avoid those. The oaths aren’t necessarily a problem if the ideals and purpose of the fraternity are not anti-christian or anti-Catholic.

My university certainly doesn’t have fraternities that require the members to wear hoods

I doubt that it’s immoral, but it sounds odd

well I live in a college town and the fraternities here I am sure do not require their members to wear hoods, which would seriously interfere with their beer drinking.

So I’ve already been in this fraternity for a number of years. I didn’t know they robes until I got initiated. I was under the impression all fraternities wore robes. Anyway, I really don’t know because in the formal meetings, they say things about a Christian God, so it sounds like they are an organization that wants to be lead by Christian values. I really don’t know. Are there any other fraternity members out there?

I myself am in a fraternity. The Holy Fraternal Order of the Knights of Columbus

Theres nothing sinister like that in fraternities. Not in ours at least.
I myself am a 3rd Degree so I can attest to that.

Us Knights do take Oaths. The first is an Oath of Secrecy. This is only to ensure that the following ceremonies remain impactful and that they will still hold meaning to new members coming in. In other words, to keep it interesting for the newbies.

It is my understanding that most college fraternities and sororities do so as well for the self-same reasons. The wearing of robes is usually done to make the ceremony/initiation memorable. To have such an oddity associated with a ceremony would certainly make it stay in your mind. This is usually done to really drive home the message or prinicples being taught by the fraternity or sorority. Again, nothing sinister. Secret mottos are sometimes held likewise. Just to have a fancy-schmancy thing to call their own. And occasionally there may be some principle associated with it. To drive home the message, but nothing bad. Handshakes are usually just for novelty. Rarely is there anything even associated with them.

Secret creeds or recitations at meetings would be a red flag. Us Knights in our meetings we just say the pledge, an opening prayer or two and have the meeting. a closing prayer at the end and then everyone goes home.

But if there are any bad things like you are afraid of, I wouldnt join. Especially if there is convincing evidence of such things.

If you want, why not join the Knights? We have college Councils set up at many campuses. If yours doesnt have one, go to the nearest. OR go to the regular Council at your Church. They’d love to have new members.
