Hello All (this is long-grab a cup of coffee!)
Code:
I just wanted to throw this out there and get some opinions and maybe help others who are facing similar circumstances

I just started the Spring semester at my Community College and I am slogging through my Gen Ed requirements so that I can at some point get my AA and finally transfer to university. Well Gen Ed does not allow for much choice and with the budget so strained here in California there are not many offerings so you kinda gotta take what you can get if you want to fulfill the requirements in a reasonable amount of time. I have been fine with what I have been offered until this semester when I enrolled in a Womens History Course.

I was actually excited to learn about what women have done for the country. There are loads of women that I admire so this really seemed like a good fit to me. Well what I inadvertently ended up signing up for was NOT a class on women in history. It was instead a course on The Feminist Movement veiled behind the label of Womens History. I ended up having to make the decision to drop the course today which will put me even farther back in my studies. I'm not a youngster by any stretch. I'm 41 years old but still want to accomplish my goal of getting a college education. Anyway...Here is what happened today.

We were given a list of famous women and it was like a pop quiz. We were asked to chime in about what we knew about women on the list. I knew about quite a few and was happy to contribute. But then I looked down the list and saw the category Roe V. Wade. My heart sank! OH NO! Sure enough the prof. (a woman who labeled herself a hard-core feminist) called on the class to discuss RVW. All the girls started talking about how it gave "us" the right to have abortions etc. and the prof. said "ya, and you know the Republican congress is going to try their damnedest to repeal it and take away "our" freedom!" She went on to say how sickening it is that we are going to lose our rights and on and on. Me and my sister (who was also in the class) gave each other "the look"-here we go, time to bash the Catholics! On the way home we were both fuming. We felt that we had been the victims of bait and switch. We just wanted to learn about things such as women's suffrage etc. not hear some feminist spiel about a subject that we know is just wrong and a law that should have never been put on the books to begin with.

Why do people get feminism confused with the right to have an abortion? To me being a woman is not summed up in terms of whether you can legally do something that is immoral. I am all for equality but I am also a person that tries to live a life of morality. I think it is possible to be a strong woman, educated, successful and pro-life. But NO! I guess you can't be any of those things and call yourself a "real" woman. It broke my heart. Because all these 18 year old girls were siding with her and I was seeing how impressionable young women are and how they just hung on this profs. words. What right does this person have defining sexual morality to these young women? That is not her job! That's a job for the girls parents and hopefully their churches. This has made me so disgusted. I have a 10 year old daughter who is seeing me in school. Who I hope will be proud of me and follow in my footsteps but now I will be scared to death to let her near a community college or public university!

What do you think? Was I wrong? I did write to the prof and explain why we left. I laid it all out and was honest and explained my faith. Was that wrong? What have you done in this situation? What should I do in the future?
All opinions desperately needed and welcomed!

Take Care Mary

Hi Mary,
I don’t think you were wrong in removing yourself from a class that was clearly not an objective presentation of Womens’ History. I would probably have done the same thing because it is difficult for an intelligent person to allow themselves to be subjected to this type of misinformation. Any self respecting professor of a course that deals with social issues such as this should not be advancing any one persepective but instead give adequate presentation of all relevant views. Unfortunately, this is not the state of “higher eduction” in our country. It has become a soapbox for all types of left wing ideaologues to poison the minds of our young people. This is not to say they do not have a right to their opinions. They have as much right as anyone but their job is to educate, not indoctrinate. You are experiencing first hand what has been destroying the moral fabric of our nation for the past two generations. This is why we see that sex has become a recreational activity and abortion has reach epidemic proportions. Quite the opposite of liberating women, abortion (i.e. RVW) and artificial contraception have served to objectifiy women and degrade them to an object of sexual pleasure.

If there was time and space I could probably write a book on this so I will stop now before I get carried away. I do want to tell you that I am so glad there are still wonderful people like yourself who can see with such clarity and refuse to fall victim to the lies that have been propagated by these irresponsible so called professors who fill our colleges and universities. Your daughter is very lucky to have a mom like you to provide her great moral and sipiritual guidance. It is the only defense against this type of disgusting abuse of power you have seen first hand.

I will keep you in my prayers.

By the way, an excellent book that is both a quick read and very enlightening is titled “Seven Lies about Catholic History” by Diane Moczar a history professor at Northern Virginia Community College. Not only does it give an honest presentation of actual history, it clearly shows how so called historians have re-written history, deleting critical facts and making up others, to advance their anti- Catholic bias. One thing I’ve learned is that it is hard work finding Truth. You have two choices, trust in man or trust in Christ and his One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Since Jesus IS Truth, I choose him.

👍 WOW!! That is one well written post!!

I commend you for standing up for the truth, and agree with the previous poster who said that your daughter is lucky to have a mom who is morally grounded.

I attended a Catholic college as an undergrad, and generally didn’t run into these issues but in graduate school, I attended a public university and experienced some of what you have, though not as blatantly. I had a professor for a theory course who brought her feminist views into what otherwise would have been a useful and informative class, and I was the only one in the entire program who didn’t share her views.

I’ve found it very hard to be out here in the workforce too, in one of the most liberal states in the nation, among people who all buy into a feminist mentality. It’s a constant battle between keeping my mouth shut and speaking when it’s important enough, but I’m afraid I don’t always do such a good job defending my faith, and I admire you for what you did in leaving and explaining why.

I think in the future, I’d stay away from any course with the word “women” in the title, even if it means getting a little behind. In my experience it’s just not worth it, because it hurts your grade and no one takes you seriously even when you do speak up. Although, I was among graduate students who were a bit more opinionated because they were older.

On the other hand, if you felt strong enough and compelled to, you could make an impression on the younger students by staying in the class and vocalizing your disagreement. They’ve probably never heard anything otherwise. It really is unfortunate that the higher education institution has gone so far down this road. We’re supposed to be helping students learn to think critically and use reason and instead they are being spoon fed lies. This is actually one of the reasons I am switching careers (I work in higher ed currently). I’m sick of it.

Why does this professor even have a job? If the circumstances were reversed, and the professor took the pro-life stance, and condemned all those who were pro-choice, does anyone believe she would still have a job? Such things should not even be mentioned in this course.

I have to disagree in that it was the right decision to drop the course. Imo, that was the easy decision. I can relate to your frustrations as I took a course called “Women in Politics” when I was in college. Now, I am a very blunt and outspoken individual so I disagreed with my professor on many a things! And I made that known!

I also don’t think you should stay away from those types of courses. Some of these young men and women who take these courses would benefit from hearing your view on such matters. I’d like to tell you about my experience with college and my feelings on abortion.

I grew up with a devout Catholic father and was pro-life, but my feelings on the matter had gradually shifted as I heard more and more propaganda from those who are pro-choice and I eventually changed my views on the matter. I ended up having an abortion at one point and it messed me up…BIG TIME! At the time of my decision to go through with it, I was surrounded by people who were pro-choice, some of them having had abortions of their own. At the time I thought there was nothing wrong with what I was choosing to do. It wasn’t until I re-enrolled in college years later to become a nurse, and sitting through my maternity class that I had my “eureka moment”.

I have since changed my beliefs again and am pro-life. It is oh so easy for us to become victim of the evil in this world. I did! I had written in another thread that I wished there was someone in my life who was pro-life that I could have turned to that would have talked me out of my decision. At the time, I wasn’t really in a good relationship with my father, and my mother wasn’t a good confidant.

Anyway…now I’m rambling. My point in all of this though, is that while it is easier to just drop the course, or to stay away from similar courses, I think the cause would be better served by those of us who are pro-life confronting the opposition. You never know…you may just change the mind of one of the other students in the class.

I would pray for the courage to stand up for your beliefs if ever in a similar situation again.

I would have walked right out of that class and gone straight to the Admin Office and signed up for something else. These types of classes stay in business because of attendence, the more you spread the word and complain about what is really being taught there, the sooner students will avoid that class and it will be cancelled. I would never go back to that class, go to Summer School if you have to.

I got the feeling though, that if I stayed and tried to make my views known I would be accused of harassment and maybe even thrown out. Believe me it was tempting to just let her have it right then and there but lets face it- I would have been called a religious fanatic and may have made people more resolved in their Pro-Choice stance. I totally relate to your story a lot of us women have had similar experiences due to missteps in youth and so on. I have brought a young lady into the church who got messed up in college and was force to have an abortion. She is pro-life and loves the lord and now her heart breaks over how wrong she was to be bullied into the abortion years ago. I guess that's why I got so disgusted and left. All these smartallicky young girls think they got it all figured out because they are "big college women". Pleeez! You can't speak to that kind of arrogance and when you have an educated adult, successful professor up there rooting them on in their ignorance, you feel like there is no point in trying to be the lone decenter in the room. I am really growing tired of the way society is letting our young women down. Right is Wrong and Wrong is Right. I just don't know what to think anymore.
Thanx Take Care Mary

Good points and very true. I actually have a habit of letting my mouth get me in trouble because I am so outspoken and to the point.

And good on you for helping that young woman! The world needs people like that! God Bless!

Hi Mary

Was the course titled “Women in History” or “Women’s Studies”?

Women’s Studies is, generally speaking, really Feminism 101. If the course title was “Women’s History” or like that, I would complain to the Dean that the course title be changed.

I took a Women’s Studies course undergrad. I was a senior, had all my GenEd requirements met, all my Major coursework done, and just needed the credits.

I thought it was ridiculous and felt especially bad for the poor, lone man in the class as each session devolved into man-hating rhetoric. I stayed in the class and played devil’s advocate. THe professor was pretty game for it, though. She liked the back-and-forth, I think. I found it somewhat amusing, mostly ridiculous and about 10% a learning experience!

Welcome to academic liberalism.

I would suggest that you write the department head, along with the board members of the college, stressing that it is the title and course description that is in error rather than complaining about the content of the course.

Write what you expected, what was really the case, why you dropped the course, and how it affected your overall progress. Write in terms of your disappointment that the course description does not match the content, rather than of your disagreement with the content.

It is a rare department head (extremely rare as to be non-existant) and/or board member who will attempt to interfere with an instructor’s presentation of this or that, under the guise of “academic freedom”.

There’s not much else to do. In the future, carefully look at course descriptions and try to read between the lines. Contact the instructor before signing up for the class and see if they’ll email you a syllabus for the course; that way you can review the topics that will be covered in the class. That’s not a sure-fire way to avoid liberal feminist secular tripe, but it’s a start.

Please don’t be discouraged. I spent 10 years at a major state university studying for my profession, and thus far have put in another 11 years studying at the seminary for a Master’s degree in theology. It’s often a very slow, tedious process, and in filled with lots of interesting people along the way.

As well, as a forty-something, you posess something that the younger students do not; a strong sense of yourself, life experience, and a developed radar for “BS”. Many instructors are conditioned to being able to pretty much say anything they want, unchallenged, as they have a captive audience over whom they have some control (or at least over their grades).

Be aware as well that some instructors are bullies in this regard, “forcing” students to take their POV as Gospel truth, even if it’s just through that course where they have control over them. Most students just keep their mouths shut, spit back what the instructor feeds them, and take a decent grade home. Some instructors cannot handle a mature student that gives a reasoned, calm, well thought out response to their BS.

Just some thoughts…

There are exceptions, but I’ve found that most college professors can appreciate and respect a well-researched, well-formed argument even when it disagrees with them. I remember enrolling in a Shakespeare course and discovering the professor’s focus was going to be on feminism, gay rights, crossdressing, and racism. I made it a point to disagree with him throughout, and found that required knowing the plays better than the average student. In the end, he awarded me a B. I had a similar experience in a US history course.

Mine never ‘forced’ people so much as presented only one side of the argument, so agreeing required only regurgitating their lecture notes, and disagreeing required original research and critical thinking.

Hello SJ Pray 4 Me
Code:
It was titled History of American Women so there was no mistaking it as a womens studies course. Believe you me I wouldn't have bothered. I have been keen to stay far away from those types of courses. So it was a real blindsiding. I really wish there were such things as Catholic Community Colleges but there's not so I guess I'm stuck where I'm at until I get my AA and can maybe go to a Catholic university.

Well I did email her right away and told her why I dropped so far no response. Typical! So she is well aware of my objections to the course. Thank you for the encouragment. It's hard being this old and having to take so long to get a little AA degree. I feel like the clock is ticking. Unlike my younger peers I don't have years and years to waste messing around with everyone's BS. Sigh! I'm just gonna keep moving forward and someday I will be outta there and on my way.

Bless you, maryharket, for making a stand and the posters here whose support for you I echo.

It is deplorable what is happening in the classrooms. Academia is an instrument of the Left for many issues including feminism that embraces the evil of abortion.

But there are some, thank God, who are fighting the good fight in a bigger scale than what an individual action can do.

Does your community college take tax money or federal money?

Hmm I wonder if any of these girls in your class know that Jane Roe of Roe v Wade, real name Norma McCorvey, is totally and 100% pro-life now? Maybe they need to “study” a little deeper than their selective versios of history.

I walked out of several college classes instead of remaining in a room under a professor I considered not worth my time. It really was no big deal. I went and found better options. And sometimes I had to tough them out cuz I had no choice.

I have had some boorish bosses, too.

There are Catholic junior colleges, no? In this country (USA), there is something for virtually everyone in terms of education. There are online options, too.

This is the kind of professor I have for my Race and Racism in America class; we were told the first week repeatedly that any opinion other than the one that would be taught was flat out wrong without exception, that and a huge helping of White Privledge being the majority blame for the problems in colored races.

I find that POV somewhat amusing, i.e. that an opinion can be “wrong”. An opinion is merely an opinion, if it is presented as an opinion…it cannot be either wrong or right.

The factual correctness or incorrectness of an opinion is a perfectly legitimate notion, however:

i.e. “It is my opinion that the world is flat” is an opinion. 500 years ago or so, the world was thought to be flat; that the world was flat was thought to be factually correct. But as it turns out, it was not. So someone’s opinion on the earth being flat was considered to be a “right” opinion back then, even though it was “wrong”.

So…the “wrong-ness” of an opinion presupposes that the person making the judgment on whether or not that opinion is “wrong” is privy to the objective truth regarding the content of that opinion.

How “feminist” would it be if the abortion was performed to end the life of a baby GIRL??
