I am completing my RCIA class. I know I should be asking my RCIA coordinator this question, but I am curious what others have to suggest. I will be baptised into the Catholic church this Easter Vigil (Saturday 4/3/10). I know the Church has colors for different times of the year i.e. purple for Lent etc. Should I wear a suit for my baptism? Would a shirt and tie be okay? And what color is appropriate? I am thinking of white shirt, black pants and maybe a tie with purple or gold color. Thank you.

you have to find out if baptism is done by immersion or pouring. Whether you wear it to church or change after baptism ordinary business attire or Sunday best is appropriate, a suit always looks great. If baptism is by immersion you usually wear gym shorts and a tank, with flip flops to step into the baptismal pool, and are given a brown or gray robe to wear over that for modesty before the rite begins. Have your sponsor bring a towel for you and make sure you know what are the arrangements for getting dressed afterward (don’t forget underwear, shoes, socks and a comb).

these are questions to ask in your class not here as local conditions vary

As your RCIA leader.

The other advice, wear comfortable Sunday best (no shoes that pinch). Layer, you can go from hot to cold and you don’t want to shiver or be sweaty. Have a hankerchief or two on hand.

It will be baptism by pouring. What would the church color be for Easter Vigil on 4/3/10? Can I wear something with purple on it or would Lent be over by then?

Hi.

White is the liturgical color for the Church for the season of Easter.

I was baptized five years ago by immersion. Definitely speak with your RCIA group leader on what the procedures would be for your parish. Many older parishes have a baptismal font, where you’re only baptized by water poured over your forehead (no changes in dress necessary).

A shirt and tie, or a suit is appropriate, given the occasion. A white tie would certain express your enthusiasm!

Commonly, a newly baptized member also receives a white sash, placed over the shoulders, as part of your entrance into the Church. (Converts from another Christian tradition receive a red sash.) So, likely, the Church will have your colors coordinated for you. 🙂

At my parish we baptize by pouring. The deacon leading our RCIA class said we should wear our Sunday best and then after we are baptized we will be give a white robe to wear for the rest of the Vigil so it really doesn’t matter what color we are wearing since the robe will be covering everything.

For your information the liturgical color for the celebration of Easter is white or gold. It is not common for people to dress in the liturgical colors, although some people do seem to do this occassionally whether by intention or co-incidence, I don’t know. But you can wear whatever colors you want. A shirt and tie and black pants is very appropriate.
Our parish website has a good checklist on Holy Mass Etiquette and Attire if you want to go over it.

the color will be white for the entire Easter season, or white with gold, but it is the priest who vests in the liturgical colors, not required of the laity. You will be given a symbolic white garment to wear after baptism–a bib, stole, poncho or stole depending on local custom–so you don’t have to wear all white, although a white shirt is the dressiest thing to wear with a suit.

Prior to your Baptism your should wear subdued color grey or tan/brown would be ok. Do not wear any good clothes as you will get very wet even if you are Baptized by pouring you willl still usually get pretty wet. Have some good clothes to change into after your Baptism, you will be given something White to put on. It might be a full white robe or just a white stole.

Lent is over Holy Thursday evening. Easter’s liturgical color is white, which you will be given AFTER your Baptism. I seriouly suggest not dressing in white before your Baptism, it kind of defeats the symbolism of the white garment after Baptism.

In our parish the catechumens wear brown robes and then they get into the baptism pool for their baptism which is done by pouring. Our pastor will with some pour 3 pitchers of water over the person. After they are baptised they are presented with a white gown and candle and then go off to change. While they are changing our pastor will do the Renewal of baptismal promises with us and then we go to the pool to bless ourselves. Once the catechumens return, the confirmation rite is celebrated.
