Hi. I was wondering if someone could please tell me what colors cardinals wear during Mass. I’m having trouble finding the answer online. Do they wear their scarlet choir dress or black house dress, or is there a third color for Mass? Also, when referring to these clothes, is it correct to call them ‘vestments’, or does that term have a more limited definition?

Thank you.
Norm

Yes, they are called vestments. Cardinals wear scarlet. What they wear at any given mass depends on their role in it. So, sometimes they will be in choir, sometimes fully vested for mass, sometimes in cassock (black with scarlet trim or entirely scarlet) or clerics… it really depends.

Depends on whether they’re at home or on the road. They usually wear white at home but gray on the road… 😉
