After attending a funeral Mass today and seeing the Priest in white vestments I wonder what the most common colour of vestment seems to be at funeral Masses.
I would want black vestments and I’m curious to see if anyone’s parish uses black vestments.

White in most Requiem Masses even during Lent.

Never heard of Gold used for any Requiem Mass

Gold is optional at Easter and Christmas.

All Christian funerals are a celebration of the Resurrection. White/gold is appropriate. Red is for a Martyr.

In the Byzantine Rite a funeral is more of a day of penance asking for the forgiveness of the sins of the departed one(s). That is why the priest wears red/purple, the color of Lent.

I think this is incorrect. All masses are a celebration of the Resurrection. The way you say it, and I’ve heard many people say it like that, it’s as if just because the Church gives you a Requiem, that you’re automatically in heaven.

So while you would be correct in saying all masses are a celebration of the Resurrection, I think it would be highly misleading to say that funerals in particular are celebrations of the Resurrection. For all we know, Sally/Jimbob might be in the depths of hell. A Catholic funeral doesn’t make someone go to heaven.

Black, at the EF. White at the OF.

Though I rather black at a funeral, and I want the priest to wear black at mine, Black vestments are usually worn by the Bishop, who does the Requiem Masses. But White is more popular!

If it was a choice, I would want black. I want my funeral to be solemn and the people praying for my soul in (hopefully)purgatory. Give me Dies Irae, Pie Jesu, Libera Me, In paradisum, etc. No happy clappy songs at my funeral please. I can’t stand having someone canonized during their funeral. People should be praying for the repose of the departed’s soul. There are very few Holy people that are able to gain Heaven without the cleansing fires of Purgatory. These would be the people that our Church has canonized as Saints. I bet many would be surprised at the amount of souls that actually end up in Hell. Since Hell and the Devil are rarely discussed now days most think canonization at ones funeral is the norm, that is a sad development in our Church. Matthew 7:13-14: "Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few. Saint Faustina Kowalska Catholic mystic: “What I have written is but a pale shadow of the things I saw. But I noticed one thing; that most of the souls there are those who disbelieved that there is a Hell.”

That’s a common misunderstanding when it’s limited to the Resurrection alone.

The funeral Mass should emphasize the Pascal Mystery. That’s the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ. It’s not one without the other. There is no Easter without Good Friday.

White is permitted but gold is completely inappropriate at a funeral Mass.

I would have preferred silver trim instead of gold, but…
So would I. The silver would set off the black much better. 😉
If I know that the Roman style is going to cause a stir, for the sake of keeping the peace I use this one:
Truth to tell, I like the gothic one. But then I’ve always preferred that style to either the “Roman” or conical , or even the Boromean, varieties.

And I noticed that both samples are black. 👍

I just attended two funerals, last year. For my parents.

And I have no idea what the priest wore.:o My sister and I even place the funeral pall and I have no idea what color that was.
