What is the best way to combat anti-Catholicism? There are MANY groups, societies, and organizations out there that are aggressively anti-Catholic. My question is; are there any groups, societies, or organizations out there that are JUST as aggressive about DEFENDING the faith?

It seems that we are VERY passive about this, and I’d like to know what are we doing about it.

I live in an area where the overwhelming majority are at least historically Catholic, so this has never really been a problem for me personally. The internet, however, is a vast cesspool of anti-Catholic hatred (as well as other biggotry), and I think we need to do more to educate and debunk the lies.

Catholic.com is a great resource, but who are some of the other defenders of the faith out there???

Protestants and atheists are very argumentative, my husband was one of them. It is the passivity of a devout Catholic who prayed for years for my husband’s heart to soften. My husband now has a ‘Catholic’ mindset. So in living the faith and loving others because you see Christ in them is the greatest defense.

There are many resources. I’m sure a web search of Catholic apologetics will turn up an abundance. Off the top of my head:

Catholic.com
The Catholic-forum (the one that had Phil Krill as host once)
Philvaz.com apologetics
matt1618.freeyellow.com
peterkreeft.com
Kresta in the Afternoon Radio
Catholic Connection Radio with Teresa Tomeo
A Closer Look with Sheil Liaugminas radio
Bible Christian Society
The Catholic Voyager 😉
Phat Mass
EWTN.com
Catholics Come Home
National Catholic Register
More blogs than I can think of, but off-hand: Kathryn Jean Lopez, Elizabeth Scalia, Jimmy Akin, Pat Archbold, Jill Stanek, Jennifer Fulwiler, Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse

I’m sure I could come up with more, but gotta run

I can’t believe I misspelled “Catholicism” in the title of this thread!!! :ouch:

Awesome answer.

Support from other Catholics always make things easier. Jesus sent out his disciples in twos for a reason. Unfortunately, I find it difficult to find other Catholics as willing as me to go out and defend our faith so it can be quite frustrating. I think to myself at times, if only I had a priest in my pocket…lol to help with some of these arguments. Surely I’ve learned so much on my journey…Catholic resources online are getting better. I still find that it’s hard to find a good Catholic bible study guide online, and what protestants like to hit us up with is scripture so we have to know our bible. If find that being a regular mass attendant and taking bible study and other classes helps with that. Oh and listening to relevant radio online on the way to work! relevantradio.com/programs/go-ask-your-father

I am amazed that some Christians know so little about the origins of the bible though and just basic things that we as Catholics understand as important, like being a part of a community of believers, confessing ones sins, etc. and the most important thing Who Jesus really is and why we want to be like Him? They say they know the bible, but it seems they’ve only memorized the scriptures that tell them in their minds that we are wrong. There’s a definite movement there to teach that we are wrong, and on the contrary, I’ve never found in our church a definite movement to teach us they are wrong, moreover, we focus on what we believe in.

It seems as a child faith in God came so naturally to me, and my belief today is natural to me. So why is there all this contention among protestants about our beliefs? I believe the answer is that they are taught what’s wrong with us and live by that like an outsider looking into a group and judging it from the outside on the surface rather from within. So it’s a matter of not understanding what we’re about and what we believe. Wisdom coming from age. and the Church is very ancient.

I believe much of it lies on as individuals too. We should be informed of our faith and ready to defend it. I’m sure many of us have encountered anti-Catholicism of some type from either relatives, friends or co-workers.

Bold added.

You are absolutely right, Karen. Some people have to justify themselves by attacking others, even if they are fellow Christians. Ancient hostilities left over from the Reformation have seemingly been passed down through the generations to the present day.

These so-called Bible-Christians haven’t the foggiest notion of where OUR Bible came from, and WHO wrote & compiled it. They are blinded by self-righteousness.

Some would rather hate others than look inward at themselves.

I truly think that Catholicism is “the thinking man’s Christianity”. So much of what we believe rests on our clergy’s God-Given Authority. These anti-Catholic sects rejected that authority centuries ago, and see Catholicism as a threat to their “authority”.

I think alot of this comes from England and the Protestant sects that arose there. Catholicism was seen as a threat to the Crown, and anti-Catholicism became part of the fabric of their culture. The Church of England was founded to replace the Catholic Church, and steps were taken to eradicate the Church from the island of Britain. As new denominations split from the C of E, apparently they kept their anti-Catholic leanings…

If some of these “Bible Christians” looked at their Bibles through the Catholic Church’s Holy God-Given Teaching Authority, they might feel silly for not having seen that Catholicism is truly the real deal.

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:
“You have the mysterious conviction that you can attack a procession of Catholic worshippers, knock the miter off the priest’s head, dash the Eucharist to the ground, burn the vestments, smash the images, and overturn the altar – yet inexplicably seize our Holy Book and declare it an infallible oracle.” (Mark Shea)
Peace!!!
