"...Come and you will see"

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This Sunday, God willing, we’ll celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. The following verses from today’s Gospel (Jn 1:35ff) reminded me of the magi who traveled far to find the newborn King of the Jews:

John was standing with two of his disciples,
and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said,
“Behold, the Lamb of God.”
The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them,
"What are you looking for?"
They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher),
“where are you staying?”
He said to them, “Come, and you will see.”.…

These verses reminded me of the Magi who were “looking” also as we read in the Gospel of Matthew:

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,
saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.(Mt 2: 1-2)

These passages called me to ponder, the question: “What am I looking for?” Am I truly looking to find Jesus? Is He truly the goal of searching in my life? I invite all to ponder the question Jesus asked the two disciples who began to follow Jesus and to ponder still two more verses in Matthew’s Gospel:

…They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary His mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (Mt 2: 10-11)

4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.
7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
