So just had a wonderful experince of coming across this site and was able to pray the rosary with 50 some people, is what the site was saying was online. A few questions. These are probably beyond basic so forgive me but I’m not Catholic and I’m in a huge learning process.

The Priest would say part of the prayers and then everyone else on the video that is showing would pray the rest. Is this typical if say I was to go into church and they were having a Rosary prayer group? Are the prayers always divided up like that?

On the last prayer, Hail Holy Queen, when the Priest said “O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary”, he touched his chest for each of those statements. Why is that done? And when praying the rosary alone, should that be done?

I’m blown away by the beauty of praying the rosary and it is so far from what my protestant mind thought it was and I can’t explain how close to Christ it brings me and I’m just trying to learn all I can. And yes, will be sitting down with a Priest soon and RCIA starts in Aug. 🙂

It’s great isn’t it, such an amazing prayer. It is commonly said as a preist or prayer leader saying some of the particular prayer and the other part by the others participating. I’m not sure but I think you can choose whether you say the hail holy queen as it is a private devotion which isn’t obligatory.

I have always loved praying with others. So got very excited when I came across the site. Can’t wait to be in a church and praying with others.

Rosary prayer groups usually have a leader saying the first half of each prayer and then everyone else says the second part together. Often, the group will have one person each take a decade so five people get a chance to be the leader. Sometimes they hand out little numbers or designate special people, other times it’s just whoever speaks up first at the start of a decade gets to lead it.

People usually say the Fatima prayer (“O Jesus, forgive us our sins…”) at the end of each decade all together (no leader). At the end of the rosary, people usually say a Mary prayer all together - usually it’s Hail Holy Queen but it could be one of several others (Memorare, Sub Tuum Praesidium) and then often say the rosary closing prayer (“Let us pray. O God, whose only begotten son…”) The closing prayers can vary depending on what the group chooses to do.

Great information. Thank you. Hate asking basic questions but always glad when I do. 🙂

If you start attending Mass, in some parishes people gather for the Rosary before or after Mass. Just ask around the parish. It is very nice to pray it in church with a group.
Eventually, as a Catholic, you will want to learn about indulgences. A plenary indulgence can be gotten for various activities/prayers, including praying the Rosary in a church group, and can be applied to yourself or a soul in purgatory. This is all about the Communion of Saints and how our good actions can help those who are suffering.
The Rosary is a very powerful prayer. Our Lady, in her apparitions at Lourdes, Fatima, and many other places has urged us to say it daily. That’s good enough recommendation for many of us!!

The parish I’m looking at I know has time some get together for rosary prayer. I’ll have to find out about before/after mass.
Oh indulgences…that’s new…I will have to start researching what that is. I have so much to learn but it is an amazing process, fun, enlightening, and drawing me so close to the Lord. Just amazing.
Saying it daily has become my goal.

You can’t get indulgences till after you are a Catholic, so no need to get too deeply into those yet. Just read a basic article or two and then come back to it after you’re fully received into the Church.

You can, however, pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory whenever you wish, which is similar to obtaining an indulgence for them.
I was taught to close every prayer after the final sign of the cross with “Jesus, have mercy on the souls in purgatory and the souls on earth”.

Very good to know, thank you.

Great way to end prayers, thank you for the tip. 🙂
