Comedic dystopia?

I feel like in our timeline we’re living in a dark comedic dystopia if that makes any sense? Think about it: 24/7 biased media, right wing memes, mass shootings, social media, internet addiction, increased isolation, celebrities are becoming president, political correctness, men becoming women and women becoming men, mass surveillance, censorship by big corporations, populism, extreme polarization, and much much more. Not that all of that is comedic, but I think you atleast get the gist of what I’m saying. There is something deeply wrong with society and I think much of it is due to us living in a new age, the information age. Agriculture brought forth the state, industrialism gave birth to ideologies, and technology is bringing forth… all of this…

It looks pretty grim, I agree with you. It helps me to see the humor out there. Develop a dark sense of humor and all the things you mentioned will make you laugh!

My main problem with it, is that it makes it extremely hard to write science fiction. Any weird thing that can be conceived is already being done, or at least attempted. Girl who thinks she is a cat; women marrying a house; people having surgery to make themselves disabled; people changing their sex. Before long robots will be demanding equal rights. Soylent Green is not far away.

You may want to check out Idiocracy. It’s a movie whose premise is that as people continually get dumber and with no natural predators we end up in a trash heap that we’re too stupid to realize is a trash heap. The most average man in 2006 is locked away (a la Rip Van Winkle) and wakes 500 years later as far and away the smartest man alive. It’s frightening how some items that were satire only 13 years ago are actual things we’re dealing with now.

Any weird thing that can be conceived is already being done, or at least attempted.

Some years back, there was a play written—it was a slapstick screwball comedy about the worlds kookiest couple, and one of the story lines was that they had a baby and refused to tell anybody (including the baby) what it’s sex was because they were going to let it “decide for itself”.

I can’t remember the name of it,

It was hilarious when it was written and never meant to be a prophetic piece or anything other than screwball comedy.
