At 48 I have been recently Confirmed as an adult into the church but feel a bit lonely sometimes wishing my parents were still alive, and sadly all the rest of my family don’t go to church (some are lapsed Catholics)

My dear nephew is getting married in a registry office shortly and has invited me, So should I go to the civil wedding / give them wedding gift?

I am trying to evangelise them with little success! I try to show Love first as it is the one thing that unites us all.

I know how you feel! I only have a handful of Catholics to associate with…makes it lonely when you want to share your faith…outside of my husband, myself and my sister, none of them attend Mass…or Liturgy

I would attend service just because you love them, and a gift is always nice too…

Thanks for your rapid replies, I was just a bit worried that it being a civil wedding ie not a church wedding it would be not what God wants.

Sometimes I need guidance from other Catholics … I searched the internet including
this forum for answers to this issue , and was concerned that some Catholics were saying civil marriages don’t count at all and so sexual relations henceforth were tantamount to fornication… Then I read a less severe ‘judgement’ that a Civil marriage although a marriage by law still has some merit and shows commitment etc …

My heart tells me to go too to show love:thumbsup:

Our oldest daughter married in the Church, our other daughter married at the County Recorders office…I wasn’t happy, but I went.

My hope is that one day she will be married in the Church…she’s strong in her Catholic faith, even though she doesn’t attend Mass…her husband is unbaptized…God can do miracles, I am sure of this…

Prayer, prayer prayer is what is ALWAYS needed…

Think of your gift as planting a seed: a Catholic family Bible, a his n hers rosary set with booklet, a year enrollment of Masses from a shrine, and if all else fails, slip a green scapular into the wedding card. 🙂

Check the threads concerning convalidation.

I always thought that a man and woman marry themselves, and the Church gives them its blessings. Of course the Church checks for impediments to see if they can marry. I believe this is a Church teaching. The couple to be married administer the sacrament to each other, and there is the “common law marriage” The priest is a witness. Any thoughts ?

Thanks I think the idea of including a family bible is a good one I have a gift list so may select something from there and wrap it up with the Catholic Bible.

I did look up convalidation yesterday and it seems this would be possible if they convert later so I’ll pray for them quietly.c:thumbsup:

I know that my nephew would have preferred a Church wedding even though I don’t think he attends any church regularly but his fiancé feels it would be disingenuous or something can’t remember exactly, but a Bible May as previous poster said sow a seed so let’s hope so:thumbsup:
