Commandment IV vs. II

Dearly beloved…

My non-practising parents are going through several emergencies this weekend, including the potential death of a family member. Though nothing is physically preventing me from leaving my home and going to Mass tomorrow, they are begging me to stay put in case the situations develop further. Crises notwithstanding, I have an easy way to get to the Eucharist, but they want me to stay where I am.

They are very worrisome, anxious, and nervous people, and do not know the peace of Christ. To defy them now might just kill them!

How do I fulfill the 4th (honour/glorify thy father and thy mother) and the 2nd (keep the sabbath day holy) commandments in this situation? Am I dispensed from the Liturgy by this solemn plea from my family, most of whom are at the hospital? I love the Mass… but I love obedience and charity…
 
It is not going to kill them for you to go to Mass. Don’t be melodramatic.

One may not commit a sin in the name of “honoring” your parents. You must attend Mass unless your pastor dispenses you from attendance.

You are not caring for a sick individual. You are not prevented from attending by your own health.

No you are not “dispensed” because your parents are being overly dramatic. Read the Catechism section on the Fourth Commandment. It specifically states if what your parents are asking you to do is wrong, you must not do it. Also as an adult you do not owe obedience to parents, only respect. They also owe you respect.

How far are you away from your church? do you have a cell phone with a vibrator?
 
1ke, thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut… and my dear fellow, it’s the parents that are being melodramatic, not me. It is my great joy to serve at the altar, and this request of theirs hurts my conscience deeply…

I suppose it should be Commandment IV vs. III… 😛 oops…

It’s quite far, and I am only able to get there via someone else driving me - things are rather tight at the moment. Car pool. I do not own a cell phone, never needed it. Even if I did, they don’t care; they want me here, where I am, regardless. 😦
 
Oh I thought you picked IV, since you have to carpool and have no phone, they probably want you there. I do believe God will understand, but you must do what you feel is right for you.

This is called moral relativism, and it is a heresy. God’s law tells us what is right and what is wrong, not our “feelings” about things which can be mistaken.

Well I guess it depends on the age of the poster, doesn’t it. And I really think the poster knows the situation better than either of us, so the poster needs to do what is right for the poster. Gods law is to honor the Sabbath, and honor your parents, and so both are equal.

and well I do disagree with you, how one feels is very important.
 
1ke, that’s why I’ve called my priest. One of his brothers picked up, so he will get back to me before Sunday.

That’s that… 🙂 I just thought it good to go to my brethren here first, and only bother the busy priest if no satisfactory answer was found.
 
Please let us know what the Priest tells you. I do hope your relative takes a turn for the better. Prays for you.
