Today is the Commemoration day of St. Zephyrinus, elected Pope of the Catholic Church in the year 202, and filling the pontifical chair for seventeen years until his death in 219. Here’s a short biography of the saint, taken from The Lives of the Saints, by Alban Butler:

“Zephyrinus, a native of Rome, succeeded Victor in the pontificate, in the year 202, in which Severus raised the fifth most bloody persecution against the Church, which continued not for two years only, but until the death of the emperor in 211. Under this furious storm this holy pastor was the support and comfort of the distressed flock of Christ, and he suffered by charity and compassion what every confessor underwent. The triumphs of the martyrs were indeed his joy, but his heart received many deep wounds from the fall of apostates and heretics. Neither did this latter affliction cease when peace was restored to the Church. Our saint had also the affliction to see the fall of Tertullian, which seems to have been owing partly to his pride. Eusebius tells us that this holy Pope exerted his zeal so strenuously against the blasphemies of the heretics that they treated him in the most contumelious manner; but it was his glory that they called him the principal defender of Christ’s divinity. St. Zephyrinus filled the pontifical chair seventeen years, dying in 219. He was buried in his own cemetery on 26 of August. He is, in some Martyrologies, styled a martyr, which title he might deserve by what he suffered in the persecution, though perhaps he did not die by the executioner.”

Thanks for posting this Denise. 🙂

It’s amazing how the early Christians were so zealous in their faith.

We had a Missa Cantata today (first I have served at), though we didn’t use the Comm. of Saint Zephyrinus.

It was a special day because of the Edinburgh Fringe festival. I’m normally serving at the Low Mass which is all we can get right now.
Yeah. During the summer, the daily mass is a low mass, but the Sunday mass is sung.

I’m not sure how it works, exactly, but since it’s a commemoration, rather than a feast day, it an option to use it (I think). I think that St. Zephyrinus’ cult was suppressed in the 1960’s; so before that it may have been a feast day. Doesn’t mean that something’s wrong with the saint if their cult is suppressed; it may mean that the feast day isn’t as popular as it once was. Or something like that. It was the only saint listed in the 1962 missal for today, so that’s why I posted it. 🙂

Of course, I am aware that the Mass today was perfectly legitimate (after all, the FSSP know their stuff :p). I was a little bit sad though. It’d have just been a bit cool to have been to a Mass that wasn’t a big Feast like Corpus Christi or Fifth Sunday after whatever-have-you :p.

I think I understand what you are saying. 🙂 I think that only some of the FSSP parishes in Scotland offer weekday Masses, for which some of the lesser-known saints are commemorated.

The FSSP parish here has weekday Masses, but did not have St. Zephyrinus on the calendar, but that’s okay. Tomarrow, the feast day for St. Calasanctius will be celebrated here. I may post something about this saint tomarrow. Cheers!

There’s only a daily EF Mass in Scotland with the FSSP in Edinburgh. That doesn’t help when you’re out in Glasgow! Though there’s an EF the majority of the week here, due to it being all diocesan, it’s simply too hard for me to get to the various parishes. It’s hard enough getting to my Sunday EF! I have to travel out of my diocese.

Enjoy! And ignore my jealous grumblings towards you :D!
